Plant of the Month
Blue Larkspur
(Consolida ambigua)

A simple gift of a small handful of seed has led to a lovely annual display here at Chandor Gardens...and a little story of resilience.

I was visiting the home garden of Ben Oefinger down in Cleburne about six years ago, and was captivated by the blue larkspur blooming profusely there. Ben gave me a thimbleful of seed, and commented that was all I really needed, and he had lots of other folks wanting seeds, too. I planted them the next February, and we had a small patch of them that spring. For the next two years, I collected the seed and our planting grew ever larger. The next year, while I was out of town for a day, a well-intentioned person cleared the entire flowerbed of "all those weeds," not knowing they were young Poppy and Larkspur plants. I was heart-broken. But Mother Nature had reserved enough seed in the soil to bring forth another small crop the next year, and I learned lessons in patience, saving for the future, and, perhaps most importantly, forgiveness.

Blue Larkspur

The Blue Larkspur bed is located on the west side of the gazebo, and had just begun to flower in the photo above. If you look closely at the photo below, you can see the central two petals are formed into the shape of a bunny head!

The Nose Knows

Every garden has little spots that are particularly difficult to cultivate, and at Chandor Gardens, that spot is the Stone Ship in the Trellis Pond. After several unsuccessful attempts to find something suitable for this location, we found the solution was, quite literally, right under our noses. During pond cleaning, Toby and I were ripping out some overgrown Chameleon Plant around the waterfall, and discussing the distinctive smell of the plant, its widespread use as a medicinal herb, and its invasive potential. Toby's comment, "This spicy stuff will grow just about anywhere..." was immediately followed by a flash-frozen moment of mutual enlightenment, when we simultaneously smiled and turned toward the Stone Ship. Thirty minutes later, we had transplanted several clumps of rhizomes and a rogue iris for good luck. Our new colony of Chameleon Plant (Houttuynia cordata) is now sailing right along.
