The Queen's Tea & Luncheon at Chandor Gardens

September 9, 2015
11:00 am - 1:00 pm
In The Great Room

In order to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II on becoming the longest reigning British Monarch in history, Chandor Gardens will be holding a "Queen's Tea and Luncheon" on Wednesday, September 9th inside the mansion. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will surpass Queen Victoria on this day to nab the title of longest on the throne, and we are thrilled to be a part of the small celebration being held worldwide in her honor.

This will also be a time to commemorate Douglas Chandor's coronation portrait of the queen, circa 1952. Douglas, (being born in England and had already previously painted royal family members) spent 6 weeks living in the Savoy Hotel in London as he vigorously labored away at the historical painting. While the original is permanently enjoyed in the British Embassy today, a beautiful lithograph copy of the portrait resides in the parlor of the mansion at Chandor Gardens.

Complimentary tea and scones will be given away from 10am-3pm inside the mansion. The luncheon will take place from 11am-1pm in the "Great Room", which was formerly Douglas's studio. For lunch reservations and menu selection, please contact caterer Kelli Hamilton at (817) 374-2697.

*All guests wearing large or fanciful hats will get in to the gardens for just $1.00 admission price all day long!

So come and enjoy the beautiful, tranquil gardens and celebrate this milestone in British history!

Plant of the Month

Lemon Lollipop (Pachystachys lutea)

Lemon lollipop is a soft-stemmed tropical shrub, native to Peru, that matures to about four feet tall. Here in Texas, it makes a wonderful summer annual for shady flowerbeds. The actual flower is long and tubular, delicately emerging from a spike of bright yellow, geometrically-stacked bracts.

Around the Garden

Clockwise, from top left: Orange Cosmos greets visitors at the garden's entrance; the last daylily spike of the season makes a splash; a dragonfly rests on a stem; one of the garden's many lizards sunbathes on a stone.

July is high season for members of the mallow family!
Clockwise, from upper left: 'Lord Baltimore' blazes red; Pink Rock Rose is a dainty Texas native; 'Lady Baltimore' blushes in pink; a double shot of Texas Star Hibiscus.

Clockwise, from upperleft:
Hanging baskets float between the water and the Wisteria Trellis; Wisteria fruits hang from their namesake trellis; Crape Myrtle bark peels away in mysterious patterns; purple is the color of the season at Cox's Mountain.

Above and below: Caladiums rule the shadiest summer beds at Chandor Gardens.

Below Left: Silver Salvias, Dusty Miller, Periwinkles, and Sunpatiens Impatiens harmonize colors.
Below Right: We snuck a yellow & orange ornamental pepper into the mix just for fun!

Parting Shot

We found a fallen blossom of lemon lollipop wedged into one of our favorite garden signs... and thought that Mr. Browning would be delighted.
