Chandor Gardens Newsletter
March 2012
Spring has sprung here at Chandor Gardens! The warm weather is pushing the spring bloom up a bit, so come out and see nature flaunt her flowers. Big days ahead include the Bridal Event (March 18) and the Spring Fling (March 31 & April 1), but any day is a good day to visit the garden.

Scroll down for some great photos of the garden; some from today, some from 60 years ago. Get the scoop on some of our pond pals.

See you in the garden.

Out & About in The Garden

Warm weather has brought us an early spring, so don't delay your visit to Chandor Gardens too long! Buds are swelling on plants all around the garden, and we're predicting the spring bloom peak from March 15 to April 15. The Chinese Fringeflowers are especially pretty right now... we even have an unusual white-flowered variety.
"Fringe White" and "Fringe"
The new entrance to the garden is progressing along nicely. We planted a hedgerow of specimen Nellie R. Stevens hollies to screen the parking lot, then added rosemary and ornamental grasses to compliment them.

New Garden Entrance

The Lady Banks roses we placed on the pergola should provide us with some good shade before too long. Chamblee's Roses in Tyler donated 47 rare shrub roses to help us out, and we have highlighted them right at the new entrance's main bed, encircling the Windmill Palm.

cottage garden and pond crittersThe new Cottage Garden (at right) is beginning to take shape. We used antique brick and an old clay drainage pipe to form the hardscape of the garden, then softened the look with weathered boulders and old-fashioned flowering perennials.

The garden is full of lots of tiny "weeds" right now...that will grow up to be flowering poppies!

POND FUN
Spring brings a new vigor to the ponds, as well as plants. We'd like to introduce you to a few of our aquatic friends.

1) Java, Chandor's largest catfish, rarely slows down for a photo.

2) Fu Man Chu is one of the largest butterfly koi at the gardens.

3) Frog - One of the tadpoles released back into the pond! (The first, and likely the only, photo as a frog... she's fast!)

Plant of the Month
White Andromeda
(Pieris japonica 'Mountain Snow')

andromedaWe received this plant as a donation from the folks who grow the Southern Living Plant Collection about two years ago. I was leery of growing it at Chandor Gardens, because I knew it did very well in Philadelphia and Portland... an almost sure-fire clue that it might roast to a crisp in our Texas summers. Well, we planted it in a pot with ultra-premium potting soil, and gave it lots of water and fertilizer. This spring... shazam! We were rewarded with a flowing fountain-like effect of blooms, courtesy of many pendulous strings of gorgeous little "inverted urn" flowers. If those little flowers look familiar to you, it's because Pieris is a member of the Heath family, which also includes blueberries.

This plant is among those I place in the "gourmet plant" category for North Texas. It is not for the novice, but for those seasoned gardeners who want to push that envelope in hopes of something unusually spectacular.
Chandor Memories

Last month, we showed you a vintage photo of Douglas Chandor and his gardeners in the Silver Garden. Your response to this was so overwhelming that it inspired us to take some "then & now" photos of other places around the garden.
