Chandor Gardens Newsletter
February 2012
Don't you just love Texas winters? One minute you're shivering and the next you're wearing shorts!

Wintertime at Chandor Gardens is much different than most people think---it's one of the busiest times of the year. Pond cleaning, infrastructure repair, project installation...and the list goes on.

Our new street lighting and the new pedestrian entrance have both brought many changes and challenges, but they will make the garden a better place for you. Come see what all the fuss is about!

The Chandor Garden Staff

Out & About in The Garden

February finds the garden's fish particularly happy in their clean ponds. We have seven different types of fish at the moment: standard koi, butterfly koi, standard goldfish, fantail goldfish, catfish, bluegill, and a growing population of fathead minnows.
Koi and Bullfrog Tadpoles
Koi and Bullfrog Tadpoles
We also were careful to conserve a small population of bullfrog tadpoles during the pond cleaning process, and they seem quite content in their new home.
Toby Mize and Master Gardeners

Work continues in the greenhouse; bumping up tropical into larger containers, separating and refining the succulent collection, and sowing seeds of unusual plants to feature in the garden.
Bowling Green after the big rain
Bowling Green after the big rain

"The Big Rain" event on January 24 & 25 left its mark on Chandor Gardens by turning the Bowling Green into a veritable swimming pool.

A local urban legend exists that this area actually used to be a swimming pool, an idea refuted by vintage photographs that show it was always a bowling green.

Landscape Design Class
Saturday, February 4
10a.m. to 12 noon
$10

The Parker County Master Gardeners will be hosting a Landscape and Design class on Saturday Feb. 4th from 10:00 am - 12:00 noon. Steven Chamblee, Chief Horticulturist at Chandor Gardens, will be giving the program on designing and building a Cottage Garden. The class will cover how to preserve the historic look of the Gardens while adding a new feature as well as discussing how to achieve maximum impact in a small space. A Cottage Garden will be added directly behind the Chandor Gardens Bride's Cottage. We will be planting evergreen shrubs in this new area the day of the class. Herbs beds and a cutting flower section will be added later after all danger of frost has past. Several varieties of flower seeds have already been planted in the greenhouse by the PCMG for this project. The fee for the class will be $10.00 and handouts will be available for you to take home. We hope you can join us for a great educational experience. Be sure to bring your gloves as this will be a hands on experience. To register or for additional information please call Lee Ann at 817-598-4402 or 817-613-1700.

The Master Gardener Association is a volunteer organization whose members are trained by county extension agents and faculty from Texas A & M. We volunteer for the Texas Agrilife Extension Service of Parker County. We are happy to share what we have learned from these experts as well as years of personal experience with the citizens of Parker County . Contact the Master Gardener Association at 817-598-6168 or at www.pemga-texas.org.

Plant of the Month - Winter Daphne

Winter Daphne
Winter Daphne
The botanical name of Winter Daphne (Daphne odora) gives a clue to one of its distinct features: a powerful and lovely fragrance emitted by its small blooms. Native to China and Japan, this small evergreen shrub is seldom seen in North Texas gardens, as it requires careful pampering to survive our summers. The payoff comes in mid-winter, when clusters of rosy buds open up into golf ball-sized spheres of extremely fragrant, pink, tubular flowers that cast a delightful scent far into the garden.

Our particular specimen was a gift from Linda Gryfon, a Canadian who, eight years ago, took a landscape design class from Steven and insisted that he include "an absolute gourmet plant that none of my neighbors will have" into her garden design. Returning to her homeland in 2008, she dug up the plant and presented it to Steven as a gift before she departed.
Chandor Memories
Douglas Chandor - Hands-On
Douglas Chandor - Hands-On Gardener
This vintage photograph shows Douglas Chandor making adjustments to a bed of Artemisia as two workers look on. Mr. Chandor was a hands-on gardener, who often got a little grubby planting or laying stone and mortar in the garden.
New Grand Entrance

New Grand Entrance

In last month's newsletter we included a photo of what will become our main pedestrian entrance to the Gardens. The new stone and brick stairway is completed and driveway lighting has been installed. As you can see, landscaping will be our next step. Our goal is to complete the project by our "Spring Fling" weekend - we'll keep you updated.
