Secrets from the Garden

Chandor Gardens Newsletter - November-December, 2015

The Spirit of the Season

This season of change has us hopping! Transitioning from the long summer blaze to the quick autumn colors to the holiday decorating frenzy got us a little behind on our newsletter. In the spirit of the season, we hope you'll forgive us. The garden changes quickly these days, sometimes literally overnight. The tropical plants are tucked away in the greenhouse, the house is in the midst of being decorated for Christmas, and winter projects are already underway.

Don't forget about our Christmas Open House on December 12th, from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Bring the whole family for a great time!

See you in the Garden,
The Chandor Gardens Staff

Goodbye Old Friend

Time and the elements have taken their toll on the iconic curved pergola that anchors the Silver Garden. Regular maintenance inspections have revealed some structural compromise in the support system for the pergola, so we have already begun the process of reconstruction.

Simply acquiring the best materials for the task takes a bit of time. Large wooden beams, steel support poles, decorative columns, a new lighting system, conduit, wood stain, paint, concrete, tools, and hardware must all come together in concert to create the new pergola.

Fortunately, we have enlisted the services of Jim Sullivan to lead the project. Jim is the City of Weatherford Parks employee who led the reconstruction of Chandor Gardens' iconic bridge last winter. Jim looks forward to the challenge... "It won't be easy, but we can do it. We'll use some improved building techniques and materials to ensure a long lifespan. The new pergola will be a beauty that will serve the people of Weatherford long after I'm gone... and I plan to live a long time!"

Above: From the east end (left) to the west end, the curved pergola stretches almost 150 feet and rises about 10 feet tall. This pergola was built by Chuck and Melody Bradford in 1995 to replace the original one constructed by Douglas Chandor.

Above: Removal of a sagging column was necessary for full inspection of the support beam within. With the support beam removed, we found evidence of wood decomposition in the bottom of the hole.

Christmas Bling

Things are starting to look pretty festive around the garden these days... Inside the Chandor home, a staff and volunteers are busy sprucing up and decorating everything in sight.

Outside, Parker County Master Gardener Carol Welch has been a busy little elf these days, making wreaths for the front door, bridge, and the new aquatic Christmas display, complete with dripping wreaths and the over-the-top fabulous wreath floatilla!

Carol has also created a birdhouse village on the steps in the Silver Garden. Aside from the wonderful display, she also rescued some old light fixtures from the barn and renovated the rusting relics into beautiful features for the garden!

Around the Garden

Above: Left, the Ginkgo tree lights up in a short-lived blaze of glory. Right, the bold fruits of 'Oakland' Holly begin to color up for the season.

Below: Left, this ornamental mustard flaunts its purple leaves. Right, a Callery Pear shimmers with fall colors.

Parting Shot

From the archives... this image of the pagoda pool made me chuckle, as whoever took it tilted the camera to take a crooked shot... just like I accidentally did some 70 years later!
