Secrets from the Garden

Chandor Gardens Newsletter - October 2017

How Time Flies...

September really flew by making swift headway into October with cooler temperatures, but the last of the warmth is not done yet! We are currently experiencing a wealth of Painted Lady and Swallowtail butterflies congregating in the gardens to make the most of the last of our summer blooms before they go into their winter dormancy. But fear not, fall color is just around the corner with plenty of its own beauty and attractions, as well as our annual Autumn Art Walk and Goblins in the Garden coming up fast! We hope to see each and every one of you in the coming autumnal days!

Keep up with us on Facebook and we’ll keep you posted there too.

See you in the Garden,
The Chandor Gardens Staff

Letter From Chandor Gardens Foundation President

Elizabeth Lawrence

From Elizabeth Lawrence,
President Chandor Gardens Foundation, Inc.

Texas gardens are at their most beautiful in the Spring and Fall so come stroll through our lovely Chandor Gardens. Last year's New Year's Eve celebration at Chandor Gardens was a great success, and the Foundation is in the midst of planning another elegant New Year's Eve. Please keep an eye on our website, www.chandorgardensfoundation.org, for details as space is limited. We also want to thank the hardworking staff at Chandor Gardens for all that they do to make visitors feel welcome and to provide an awe-inspiring garden experience.

Moon Gate Grotto Spiffying

Throughout the month of September, Steven Chamblee and Fort Worth artist, Anne Ekstrom, undertook the cleaning and restoration of Douglas Chandor's Chinese Lake diorama located on the east wall of the Garden.

This was an intensive task involving the removal of all the figurines and island formations that make up the village and cleaning and repainting them along with the lake and surrounding features. We also purchased a new red bench that resides in front of the diorama and, hopefully, will encourage guests to sit a moment and reflect on Chandor's creation.

Around the Garden

Around the Garden

Back on the east side of the garden, in the stairwell by the Mount Cox waterfall, grows a delicate-looking, unassuming little plant with dainty white flowers (pictured above). However delicate it may appear, this fragile-looking plant offers more than meets the eye.

This plant is the Diamond Frost Euphorbia hybrid, and it truly is the MVP of summer blossoms. It requires low maintenance, is tough as nails to drought and heat, and has remained full and lush for months. If you stop by to peruse all the beautiful specimens Chandor Gardens has to offer, take a moment to appreciate this sweet beauty of a plant, for its beauty lies not just in its appearance, but in its enduring resilience.

Meet the Crew! - Toby Mize

Toby Mize

Toby Mize is an invaluable member of Chandor Garden's staff in his position as "senior Groundskeeper II", having worked here since early 2006. He has gained a wealth of knowledge since regarding not only the flora that the gardens has an abundance of and its care, but also in maintaining irrigation lines and sprinkler heads, as well as the heavy machinery that often gets utilized, and in maintaining the fountains and various water features, and ultimately keeping the gardens as lush and green as possible. He also is invaluable in setting up for the many events Chandor Gardens hosts, and he helps organize the volunteers who come and provide greatly appreciated help. Toby is directly responsible, along with Steven Chamblee, for the beautiful gardens people know and love.

As much as we love Toby's efforts in the garden, we recognize he does have a life outside of his work life. During his off time, Toby enjoys spending time with his three sons and his extremely creative wife first and foremost, but he also is the president of an international nonprofit corporation called Back to Life Ministries, which entails a lot of mission trips to Haiti for relief and aid. To date, the organization has provided a children's home for approximately 30 orphaned children, staff, and teachers. They also have a pole barn they provided to serve as their church and school, and are in the process of building an entire school building. Additionally, they have a feeding program for the school children for their lunches for the three days a week that school is open. They are working to being able to provide an entire five-day school week. They also facilitate a bi-yearly medical clinic, and have procured a van for transportation, and when Hurricane Matthew devastated the country last year, they assisted with clean-up, and helped supply food and medical supplies.

In addition to enriching the lives of the people of Haiti, Toby is also a skilled musician and is his church's music director, and has had a firewood business for ten years. As if that weren't enough, he also manages a fireworks warehouse. He certainly is a man of many skills, but he is not the only talented member in his family. His wife, Baily, has been a huge asset to Chandor as well, as she has provided the art and painting for the many signs around the gardens, and painted the Children's Gate door on the east side of the garden. As an artist, she also works with paint for commissioned paintings, operates as a very skilled photographer, makes macramé wall art, and like her husband, has quite the green thumb. They clearly are a talented family with many skills, and Chandor Gardens is quite fortunate to have both their skillsets.

When asked about his favorite thing about working at Chandor Gardens, he said, "the first thing that comes to mind is all the new people I meet who come for weddings and events; there have been so many interesting people over the years who have come through. I also really enjoy working with our volunteers and I've met some great people from that, people coming out here and working. I like being able to see people really appreciating the garden and taking it all in, people who maybe wouldn't have been able to come out here otherwise, and I've really made some good friends that way, and I really like that. Being able to speak positively into people's lives, and kind of help give them the push they may need, I really enjoy it."

Here at Chandor Gardens, we really appreciate the wealth of diversity and experiences our staff brings to the table, so check back to see more installments of "Meet the Crew," as more will be coming soon!

Plant of the Month

Fall Aster

Fall Aster
Asters make for beautiful fall color without fail around the start of October. Their bushy and mounding growth habits, as well as their ability to bloom even in partial shade, make them an attractive specimen in any Texas garden. Their blooms truly prove themselves to be steadfast, punctual, and beautiful every fall.

Parting Shot
