Secrets from the Garden
Chandor Gardens Newsletter - July 2021
Happy July from the staff here at Chandor Gardens! It's hot out, and summer is in full swing, but thanks to our amazing and hardworking team, the gardens are beautiful, lush, and green! And while it may be warm, there are no shortages of shady and breezy hideaways out in the gardens. It may be quiet around here now, but not for long because we have our fall events coming up.
On Saturday, October 16th, we will be hosting our annual Autumn Art Walk. That seems like a ways away, but now's the time to reserve your spot as a vendor! If you are an artist or a craftsman, if you paint, sing, create something to sell, we want you! To reserve a spot as a vendor, all you must do is call us at 817-598-4334, and we will get you set up!
Additionally, the time draws near to our popular and highly-anticipated Jack-O' – Lantern Nights event! Be sure to mark your calendars for this three-night family-friendly event that includes a pumpkin carving contest, scavenger hunts, and a spOoOky night walk through the antique Chandor Gardens. The way through will be lit with ethereal lights, fog, and music for a memorable family night. More information on this eerie event is coming soon!
As always, we are deeply honored and happy to have a community of people who actively participate in our events. We couldn't do it if it weren't for you! Stay tuned to our monthly newsletter and follow us online for more information on these events and other goings-on in the gardens!
Keep up with us on Facebook, and we'll keep you posted there too.

Japanese Maples (Acer palmatum)
Chandor Gardens has many varieties of Japanese Maples throughout the Garden, and we think the way they are grown is super interesting! Japanese Maples are typically grown by grafting desirable cultivars directly onto Acer palmatum rootstock calipers. This gives these sub-varieties a strong foundation for prime capillary action and stronger roots than what might be achieved by planting extremely temperamental seedlings.
|
|
However, sometimes an interesting phenomenon can take place, as demonstrated below! One of our staff provided these pictures of a baby Viridis Japanese Maple, in which the lace leaf foliage is the desired grafted plant and the thicker palmate leaves are from the A. palmatum rootstock. So essentially, there are two different trees growing off one trunk! This is not necessarily desirable for this plant, so we will cut back the offending portion to allow nutrients to reach the grafted species. However, there are times when these abilities are desirable, as is the case with fruiting trees. One could graft branches of several different fruits onto one tree if they did not have the space to grow multiples! We think horticulture is cool sometimes. Come out soon and see the many different cultivars we have throughout the grounds! And don't let the diminutive stature of this baby Maple deceive you; they can grow to be quite large for an ornamental understory tree!

A sure sign that summer is here (despite the relatively mild temperatures we've had) is the faithful fiery-hued Crape Myrtle blossoms every which way one looks! The quintessential summer blossom of north Texas is ubiquitous but not unappreciated. We have Crape Myrtles of several varieties throughout the Garden, but this small magenta specimen next to the office driveway just seemed especially picturesque against that big, blue Texas sky.
