Douglas Chandor's Great-Nephew, Chris Chandor, Visits the Gardens
Chandor Gardens got a lovely surprise in August with the visit of Douglas Chandor's great-nephew, Chris Chandor. Chris, with his wife and two sons, visited the gardens on August 22nd all the way from Massachusetts while traveling across country.

Immediately, one could see the family resemblance. After quick introductions and a stroll through the mansion, Chris and his family were delighted with the gardens and thoroughly enjoyed hearing stories and historical facts as they were led around the many twists and turns. His two boys particularly enjoyed feeding the koi and catfish in the ponds.

Before leaving, we were able to snap a quick parting shot of Chris Chandor and his family, and made certain they were well equipped with many Chandor Gardens souvenirs. We all hope they visit us again very soon.

Bowling Green
Quick as a flash, the Bowling Green at Chandor Gardens got a permanent make-over with the installation of the newest generation of artificial turf. The new turf looks amazingly real, and will provide a consistent quality appearance through every season. Synthetic Grass Pros completed the project in just two days, thanks to a small army of skilled workers who attacked the job with gusto.

The soil that was removed was placed on the rocky slope between our driveways and seeded with bluebonnets, which will light up the drab hillside in spring.

Japanese Maple Grove
Recently, Parker County Judge Ben Akers passed away, and his family wanted to remember him by planting a tree at Chandor Gardens. The idea of a single tree quickly grew into the concept of a grove of Japanese Maples surrounding the Labyrinth, right in the heart of the garden. Selecting the right cultivated varieties was crucial to the success of the grove, and a combination of three cultivars was selected to meet the needs of the site. 'Tamukeyama,' an old (1710), red, lace-leaf selection that matures to about 8 feet tall and wide forms the front of the grove. Behind this, 'Seiryu,' a unique, upright and sun-tolerant form of lace-leaf, has green leaves and matures to about 15 feet tall. Finally, seedling Japanese Maples planted at the ends of the grove complete the scene.

Acquiring the right specimens for the project fell to Designs In Nature, a Fort Worth company specializing in trees. Within two weeks, the perfect trees were located and delivered to Chandor Gardens, even before the site was fully prepared.

To accommodate the special needs of these beautiful trees, Chandor staff spent several days re-building and expanding an old azalea bed that curves around the west side of the Labyrinth. Using 40 bales of peat moss and 8 cubic yards of compost (generated at our own composting area), we mirrored techniques used by Douglas Chandor long ago to ensure such exotic treasures could thrive in the harshness of their new environment.

While still small at present, these trees will soon grow into a cohesive, intertwined community, creating a tableau of year-round beauty for all to enjoy. We can't think of a better way to honor a man who gave so much to his community.
