Plant of the Month Purple Waffle Plant
(Hemigraphis alternanta 'Moonlight Improved') A low-growing plant from tropical Asia, Waffle Plant spreads to form a groundcover in its native habitat. Here at Chandor Gardens, we take advantage of this creeping habit to create luxurious cascades from urns and containers. The name comes from the parent plant's characteristic of making deep puckers on mature leaves, which are much less pronounced on the more colorful cultivars.

Re-purposing in the Garden: A Chandor Tradition
Douglas Chandor re-purposed bottles, marbles, and broken bricks into many features of his garden. (He even built a fountain from an old transmission casing!) Today, we honor this tradition in a select few spots in the garden. An old park bench finds new life as a planter in the shade of the old Cedar Elm tree.
Purple Shield and Lemon Lollipop light up shady areas of the garden, whether used with an aubergine-painted tire or in an old outdoor table base, both converted into floral containers.
|
Then & Now
Back in Douglas Chandor's day, as you crossed the bridge from the front door of the house, one would meet a statue of Kuan Yin at the edge of a yellow grove bamboo grove.
Today, Kuan Yin has been replaced with a statue of a Chinese man, and a grove of black bamboo sets the scene.

Parting Shot
Snakes Alive! Well, sort of. An interesting plant popped up out of a sand pile on the "back forty" at Chandor Gardens for the third year in a row. Prairie Snake-Cotton (Froelichia floridana) is a curious-looking native plant that grows in fields and prairies from Texas to Canada. Upon close inspection, the flowers are borne in tiny spirals, which are then spiraled again into elongated inflorescences that eventually grow to resemble small, white, cottony snakes.
