1928 Chandor Portrait on View
We are extremely excited about our newest "resident" here at Chandor Gardens, an original 1928 Douglas Chandor portrait. This aptly named "Mrs. Roy Brownell and Her Son" was given to the gardens on permanent loan from the Brownell family in Flint, Michigan.
After having been in a crate in the basement of the owner's house for twenty-plus years, staff members immediately took to hammers and screw guns to unearth the incredible painting from its slumber when it reached Chandor Gardens back in March. There was an audible sigh when the crate's top was lifted and the magnificence and sheer size of the painting was revealed.
Douglas Chandor traveled to Flint, Michigan to paint this portrait for the Brownell family. The problem was not to make a "Mid-Western portrait" but to do an old-fashioned picture to hang in an old-fashioned home. Douglas said the healthy little boy was "a rascal, a holy terror." He bounced and played about, running from the room. That he happens to appear so calm and still is, the artist recollects, sheer luck. However, Douglas kept his sense of humor during the time of painting, as noted by placing his own caricature in the boy's alphabet book the child is holding.

Pause to Remember
The Parker County Master Gardeners recently added an ornamental arch to the entrance of the Memorial Garden. As this garden grows, it will blossom into a contemplative place where Master Gardeners are remembered for their service to not only Chandor Gardens, but to public spaces throughout Parker County.

Bright Idea
Contractors are installing night lighting around the garden to ensure our evening events are both safe and beautiful. It's amazing to see how these folks can turn a few piles of wire and fixtures into an elegant evening glow, highlighting the gardens many features. Perhaps even more amazing is that they run wire "invisibly" all through the garden without making a mess or disturbing the plants.
 |
A skilled installer places a light more than 30 feet up in a live oak tree. |
 |
New fixtures are carefully placed near the base of each crape myrtle in the allee. |

Then and Now
The photo above shows the Bowling Green about 1950, with Douglas Chandor tending plants along the right border. The photo below is the Bowling Green today. Both photos have been digitally colorized to a sepia tone for comparative purposes.
