Hall Ensemble
Wednesday, May 14, 2014
- Doors open at 6:45 pm for socializing and strolling through the Gardens
- Concert begins at 7:30 pm in the Great Room
- Tickets: $60 each
- Includes: Wine and catered hors d'oeuvres
Chandor Gardens is proud to host a very special evening of Chamber Music provided by the talented Hall Ensemble. The Ensemble is dedicated to bringing classical music out of the concert hall and into intimate spaces. This concert series is held almost exclusively in private homes or small venues in the Fort Worth/Dallas area with Chandor Gardens as the only Parker County venue included. We are honored to be hosting the grand finale of Hall Ensemble's phenomenal season with the world premiere performance of a powerful chamber cantata by Gregory Sullivan Isaacs and Suzanne Calvin titled UNDELIVERED. UNDELIVERED was written for the Hall Ensemble in the wake of the 50th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy's undelivered speech. Based on excerpts from the speech Kennedy was to have given at the Trade Mart on November 22, 1963, the day of his assassination, UNDELIVERED is a chamber cantata for mezzo-soprano, soprano, bass-baritone, string quartet, horn and bassoon.
The first half of the evening's program will be musical selections by Bach, Roussel, Elgar and Schubert paired with poetry readings by Kipling, T.S. Eliot and others. Guest artists include: Virginia Dupuy, Jacquelyn Lengfelder, Jeffrey Snider, Gary Levinson and Mark Houghton. Please join us as we set the stage for a warm, inviting, and moving evening of world class music at beautiful Chandor Gardens. Tickets for this special evening are limited and can be purchased at: www.hallensemble.org or by calling 817-456-3584 or 817-613-1700.

Best Bed in the Garden!
We dug a new little flower bed, threw some donated bulbs in the ground behind a row of Braveheart Begonias, and POW! Who knew this tiny plot of soil would shine so brightly, so quickly?

Plant of the Month Braveheart Begonia
(Begonia x 'Braveheart Rose Bicolor') While shopping for annual color plants at Cole's Greenhouses, I was shocked to find a few of ridiculously-difficult-to-find Braveheart Begonias tucked away among the thousands of other plants there. What else could I do? I bought all they had.
Braveheart is a super-vigorous annual that grows to about 24" tall and 18" wide. Maturing into a rather bold textured plant, its claim to fame is the Triple Crown of Texas Traits: heat tolerance, sun tolerance, and non-stop flowering through the summer heat. Earning the "Flameproof" seal of approval from the Dallas Arboretum Plant Trials, Braveheart also received an even higher honor from famed Texas Horticulturist Jimmy Turner: "If I could only have one begonia, it would be a Braveheart."

Parting Shot

Mariju-what?!? Recently, some garden guests got our attention by asking us why we have marijuana growing in the garden. A quick investigation led us to our newly planted Japanese Maples (Acer palmatum). One of the guests even refused to believe us, saying that Japanese Maples had purple leaves. Interestingly enough, most of the Japanese Maples sold in our area do indeed have purple leaves...but they are cultivars selected and cloned for this trait. This is not surprising, as Japanese Maples have intrigued horticulturists for centuries, and more than a thousand cultivated varieties exist...weeping, mounding, purple-leaved, red-leaved, dissected leaved, dwarf, and many other forms. The trees in question are actually Mother Nature's version of the plant, and few Texans would recognize them. These natural, non-selected, non-grafted, non-messed-with-by-people Japanese Maples are much more tolerant of heat, poor soils, and dryness than any of those fancy cultivars. Our five specimens were grown from seed in the Fort Worth Japanese Garden and given to us by Mary Horvath.
