Chandor & The Queen

As Queen Elizabeth II celebrates becoming the longest reigning monarch of England, we take a few moments to celebrate Chandor Gardens' own connections to Her Majesty.

England's King George VI died suddenly February 6, 1952, and Queen Elizabeth II immediately ascended to the throne. Eleanor Roosevelt asks Douglas to paint a portrait of the new Queen, so the Chandors set sail for London. The Queen gives Douglas eight one-hour sittings, and the portrait is almost complete when Douglas is suddenly hospitalized with pneumonia. Fortunately, he recovers and finishes the portrait on August 15, 1952. Though the $3000 commission does not even cover the travel and hotel expenses, Douglas knows the work transcends mere money; it will serve as an important historical record of a world event. He senses it is not only the most important painting of his already distinguished career, it will create demand for future portraits. He does not know it will be the last painting he will ever finish.

Chandor's royal adventure was captured in the October 20, 1952 issue of Life Magazine. The article, entitled, "Speaking of Pictures," quotes Douglas Chandor's description of his royal portrait subject: "The Queen is an infinitely more beautiful woman than any photograph has ever shown, and when she smiles, there is a radiance such as I have seldom seen in any face."

above: Douglas Chandor's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.

above: The title page of the article in Life magazine featuring the story of how Chandor brought the portrait to fruition.

The two photographs below show a rather serious looking Douglas Chandor discussing the final details of the portrait with a young Queen Elizabeth.

The photograph below was taken from a window at Buckingham Palace, presumably by Ina Chandor as Douglas worked on his portrait of the Queen.

And just in case you were wondering... Queen Elizabeth's official title is:
Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of Her other Realms and Territories Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith.

Around the Garden

Clockwise from upper left:
A Toothless Sotol (Dasylirion lingissimum) beams in the summer sun. Pink Rain Lily (Zephyranthes 'La Bufarosa') is a bulb that explodes into vibrant blossoms about six times each year...but the flowers only last one day! A summer-sown Zinnia pops its first blossom. Brazilian Rock Rose has lovely white blossoms with a maroon-colored throat.

Parting Shot

Sure sign that a change of seasons is at hand, a Monarch butterfly stops to rest at Chandor Gardens. It will soon be followed by thousands of other Monarchs from across North America, all on their annual migration southward to spend the winter in the Oyamel Fir forests of central Mexico. Via con Dios, pequeña mariposa!
