Plant of the Month The "Grandmother's Mystery" Phlox
(Phlox sp.)
Shakespeare never said, "Would a phlox by another name not smell as sweet?"...but he might have, had he been able to see our favorite summer perennial. Donated to Chandor Gardens by our friend and neighbor, Melissa Moorman, this Texas tough beauty has been through its paces here in the garden. When she first told us of the plant, and how it did not get powdery mildew (a foliar disease that devastates almost all known ornamental phloxes), frankly, we were skeptical. Well, Melissa was right! After four years in various locations around the garden, it has remained spotless.
Perhaps our favorite feature of this pass-along plant is the story of how Melissa's grandmother, Daisy Dill, brought the plant to Texas from Georgia...hand-carrying a clump of rhizomes on the train more than 50 years ago!

Around the Garden
Purple tones flush the leaves of Pink Flamingo Celosia (top) and Gibsoni Castor Bean (immediately above).
Silvery blues found in Brunnera and Blue Fescue Grass grace a pot under the curved pergola (above). Below, the Dwarf Pineapple accents the succulent collection.

Perfect Patio
The Ashley Deal Memorial Garden is a project of the Parker County Master Gardeners and borders the main parking lot at Chandor Gardens.
Using antique brick from an old street in Abilene that was donated by garden supporter Dustin Weathersby, the Master Gardeners fashioned a delightful circular patio between the garden's two benches. Playfully dubbed, "The Friends Circle," it will serve as a transition point during future expansions of the garden. |
Archives Alive! In cooperation with the PEACH Project (Preserving & Expanding Access to Culture and History) and the Weatherford Public Library, we now have digitalized all of our archival slides of Chandor Gardens! Next, we will begin the process on all photographs...and YOU CAN HELP! We are currently searching for images of Chandor Gardens prior to 1990. If you have some, we would love to scan them into our collection, and you can keep the original if you'd like. Pre-1953 photographs are particularly prized. Ask that aunt, uncle, or favorite grandparent if they have some old photos of Chandor Gardens. You could become a part of history!
