Around the Garden

A Spring Freshen Up

One of Chandor Gardens' most distinctive features is the Chinese Walk, located on the east end of the bridge. Originally painted in a two-tone scheme of cream and pale green, the walk's paint had long since succumbed to the elements.

Chinese walk before restoration

Just in time for spring, Chandor horticulturist Steven Chamblee took advantage of an unseasonably warm day to repaint the walk. Using historic photographs from the late 1940's as a guide, Chamblee faithfully replicated the original paint job and brought new life to the faded garden feature.

Plant of the Month
Summer Snowflake
(Leucojum aestivum)

Summer Snowflake

Native from the British Isles east to western Asia, Summer Snowflake never actually flowers in the summer. In colder climates, it flowers in late April and May, but here in Texas, it blooms from late February through March. A bulbous plant from the Amaryllis family, they naturalize easily in temperate climates, providing a cheerful touch of color to early spring every year.

Botanically speaking, the petals of Leucojum are actually "tepals," as they are an intermediate form between petals and sepals. Each tepal is adorned with a green dot. The flowers are produced in clusters called umbels, and after they fade, the base of each flower (the receptacle) swells into a little inflated, balloon-like fruit that contains the seeds.
Host with the Most

Chandor Gardens was proud to host the 2013 Annual Conference of the Texas Association of Botanical Gardens and Arboreta (TABGA). More than 70 people from 17 gardens around The Lone Star State were represented, as well as plant suppliers Abbott Ipco, Mountain States Wholesale Nursery, Steve's Leaves, and the Landscape Architecture firm, studioOutside. TABGA meets annually to discuss horticultural and operational successes, challenges, innovations, and ideas in an informal and relaxed format. This system of networking and brainstorming leads to associate and community support for all gardens involved.

Clark Gardens hosted the opening night at their 35-acre garden, treating the attendees to tours, wagon rides, and a magnificent dinner of expertly prepared rib eye steaks that left everyone in the place wide eyed and grinning.

The Parker County Master Gardeners took the reins the next two mornings with hearty breakfasts and enough homemade sweet treats to feed an army. Chandor Gardens own Toby Mize teamed up with Fire Oak Grill chef, Cy Thorne, in preparing smoked pork butt and grilled chicken for the "Monster Barbeque Luncheon." The Museum of the Americas hosted an evening reception for the event, amazing many attendees with its collection of Native American art from throughout the New World.

Attending this year were Bayou Bend, Bend of the River Arboretum, Carleen Bright Arboretum, Chandor Gardens, Clark Gardens, Dallas Arboretum, Farmers Branch Rose Garden, Fort Worth Botanic Garden, Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center, Mercer Arboretum, Quitman Arboretum, San Antonio Botanical Garden, Shangri La Botanical Gardens, Stephen F. Austin State University, Texas Discovery Garden, and Zilker Gardens.

The staff at Chandor Gardens would like to recognize the Parker County Master Gardeners for their Herculean efforts in assisting with the conference. They are truly excellent ambassadors for our community.
The Nancy Newby Brown Greenhouse

Nancy Newby
Nancy Newby Brown

About two dozen friends and family gathered on March 6th to dedicate the greenhouse named in her honor. The event was bittersweet, as it also marked the first anniversary of her death. But those who knew Nancy also knew she would not want tears of mourning, but smiles and laughter to celebrate life. The Weatherford Democrat was on hand to document the kind words, the funny stories, and the fond memories shared during the hour long event.

The greenhouse will add depth and breadth to the kinds of programs and services Chandor Gardens can provide to our community. From children's classes to adult education to horticultural therapy, the Nancy Newby Brown Greenhouse will indeed be a place where both people and plants can grow.
