Secrets from the Garden
Chandor Gardens Newsletter - January 2013
|
January is a traditional time for rest in the garden, but we've had little time for that. Between making arrangements for the Bridal Fair, greenhouse construction, and re-landscaping a few sections of the garden, we've been busy! Even so, the 60th anniversary of Douglas Chandor's passing made us pause, walk the garden, and count our many blessings. We have all been touched deeply by the spirit and creative efforts of Douglas and Ina Chandor, and it is our privilege to be the stewards of their legacy. Come and take a winter walk through the garden... the berries shine bright, the birds flitter, and bare branches form sculptures against the Texas sky... much like they did sixty years ago. Plant of the Month Burford Holly
(Ilex cornuta 'Burfordi')
Native to China, Burford Holly is commonly used in North Texas gardens, and for good reason. A robust evergreen shrub that grows to about 16 feet tall, Burford Holly's dense growth makes it an idea screen, as well as a lovely ornamental. Tolerant of a wide range of soils, it is adaptable from full sun to moderate shade, though it flowers better in sun, which is necessary to produce the copious clusters of bright red berries that make the plant so attractive during the winter. It can be sheared to produce a dense growth habit, or left untrimmed for a more open and natural look.

Adventure into Uncharted Waters There's nothing quite like an adventure into uncharted waters, and we have had quite a voyage getting our greenhouse together. From the initial donation of a greenhouse frame by Nancy and Charlie Brown, we have worked our way through utility installation, a near- impenetrable rock pad site, assembling the frame, building concrete forms, pouring the concrete slab, scoring concrete, installing the water system, constructing the end walls, installing fans and shutters, installing the roof, and assembling both plant and work benches - whew! As our "to-do" list comes to a close and we prepare to move plants into the greenhouse, let's take a look back at some of the highlights.
