Secrets from the Garden
Chandor Gardens Newsletter - December 2012
|
December brings great changes to the garden. The baring of tree branches accentuates the glitter and shine of holiday decorations. The crunch of leaves underfoot reminds us that everything has a purpose, and it is Nature's plan to let go of the past and embrace new growth when the time is right. The season exposes treasures that have remained hidden for months beneath a cloak of leaves...bird nests, sculpted bark, puffball mushrooms... all are suddenly visible to us. Come and make your own discoveries at Chandor Gardens! Happy Holidays! The Chandor Staff |

Plant of the Month Weeping Yaupon Holly
(Ilex vomitoria 'Pendula')
Few plants are as gracefully colorful in early winter as weeping yaupon holly. Maturing to about twenty feet tall, weeping yaupon's stiff, evergreen branches cascade down like a green waterfall in summer, then become adorned with brilliant red, shiny berries in the winter. The plant in the photo is one of a pair that flank the old pedestrian entrance to Chandor Gardens. The gardens' new pergola entrance is in the background, festooned with holiday garlands. |
Decked-Out for the Holidays
Every year, the Parker County Master Gardeners descend upon Chandor Gardens with pruners in their hands and smiles on their faces to create the outdoor garlands that grace the front of the Chandor home. Using natural materials harvested from the garden, they turn a few simple ropes into beautiful works of art.

Around the Garden
Mother Nature has blessed and surprised us with an exceptionally long autumn, which has resulted in some interesting scenes, such as butterflies feeding on still-standing summer annuals, as well as winter annuals such as pansies and violas. The lack of cold weather has kept the butterflies alive into December with no natural sources of pollen to feed upon, so they have come to feed at man-made gardens. The Queen butterfly above is so intent upon feeding that it ignores the human fingers nearby.
Local Weatherford artist Steffan O'Connor recently came to light as the creator of the baffling stone spirals that appeared suddenly in Soldier Springs Park. We were impressed by his skill and creativity, so invited him to Chandor Gardens to create a sculpture on the bottom of the bridge pond before we refilled it with water. Steffan brought some white stones from a local creek, combined them some black stones we had here at the garden to create his "Twining of Souls" piece here at Chandor Gardens.
Steffan also created a smaller spiral starburst sculpture by the small falls stepping stones. Unfortunately, it was destroyed by raccoons overnight while the pond was drained for repairs. Chandor Gardens Horticulturist Steven Chamblee tried his hand at a simpler underwater spiral to replace Steffan's original work. |

Time for Reflection A quick glance at the large studio window that faces the Boxwood Garden reveals the contrast of metallic gold Christmas ornaments inside the Chandor home with the soft golden tones of the cedar elm trees outside. Come discover such nuances for yourself! |
