Chandor Memories

A garden visitor recalls...

"I came out here with a friend in 2001, and we ended up getting a tour from Melody Bradford, who owned the place back then. When we finally got to the Dragon Fountain, we were all stunned to discover it was just full of toads.

It wasn't long before we realized they had gone in to lay eggs, but they could not get out. Clearly, they needed rescuing, so we took off our shoes and in we went, grabbing toads right and left... there must have been a hundred of them! Melody just about laughed her head off!"

January 2012
Welcome to the New Year. Can you believe that it's 2012?!

We had a spectacular Holiday Open House on December 10th. We hope you had the opportunity to visit while all of the holiday decorations were up. The mansion and gardens were overflowing with happiness and cheer. We enjoyed the largest attendance since the debut of the event in 2002. More than 700 guests were served: over 900 cookies, 15 gallons of Apple Cider, and an equal amount of coffee.

Change Is In The Air

Many people assume that wintertime is the time that gardeners relax and kick our feet up. Not at Chandor Gardens! Winter time is project time, and this winter we're working on something special.
new entrance
The newly exposed pergola extension that will serve as the garden's new pedestrian entrance.
Prompted by the necessity to remove the last of the Leyland Cypresses (a beautiful, but short-lived tree here in Texas) between the Silver Garden and the parking lot, we have taken this unique opportunity to develop a new main pedestrian entrance to the garden. Much grander than the current white-arched entrance, the new entrance will be much larger, drawing people directly under the garden's signature curved pergola. The new entrance will also feature new lighting, stone sidewalks, and, of course, colorful landscaping.

Removing cypress stump.
More than 80 stumps were removed during the renovation.
Like most major changes, this one made a bit of a mess. First, we removed a stone retaining wall that enclosed the Leyland Cypresses. Utilizing 15 community service volunteers, the stones were picked up and passed person to person using an old-fashioned "fireman's line." Next came the removal of the Leyland Cypress trees, utilizing chainsaws and ropes to guide the drops. The main trunks were then cleaned of their branches and sorted according to size. The debris was run through a chipper to be utilized as mulch.

The City of Weatherford Street Department sent in a large backhoe and dump truck, which dug and hauled off the stumps in a single morning. They also removed a small concrete slab and moved some soil around the site.

rustic gazebo.
We stayed true to our reuse & recycle policy by constructing a new gazebo for the garden with the raw timber from the tree removal. Sited where Douglas Chandor once built his "Garden Hut," the new seven-sided gazebo is rustic. Steven Chamblee, our Horticulturist, commented, "I wanted it to honor the raw feel of Douglas Chandor's Garden Hut, which was mega-earthy... very dark and layered in huge chunks of bark. Back then, Mr. Chandor was specifically creating a deep shade structure in a sunny spot. The new gazebo is already bathed in shade from the surrounding trees, so it made sense to leave it more open." A large bench, built from the same materials, will create a place to relax inside.

The entire project is scheduled for completion before March 1, 2012.

Did You Know

Did you know... that we feature a colorful palette of heirloom plants each year at Chandor Gardens? It's our way of honoring the garden's past while we grow toward the future. That, and we figure it would put a wide grin on the face of Douglas Chandor, who, more than sixty years ago, took special pride in bringing unexpected blossoms to this little corner of the world.

A delighted Douglas Chandor smiles in this vintage photo.
This year's crop promises vintage flowers from early spring to late autumn, including Sweet Peas, Corn Poppies, Larkspur, Giant Asters, old-fashioned Zinnias, Giant Sunflowers, Morning Glories, and several types of Nicotiana, or Flowering Tobacco.

Many of these seeds have already been carefully sown by the Parker County Master Gardeners in our off-site greenhouse, and will be sturdy plants by the time they are planted out into the garden in April.
