Secrets from the Garden

Chandor Gardens Newsletter - July 2016

A Cool Place To Be

No doubt it's hot outside, but the garden is always a cool place to be. Despite the heat, visitors keep strolling into Chandor Gardens every day. Children's laughter often competes with the constant sounds of splashing waters and birdsongs in the air. And while our staff is always abuzz tending the needs of the garden, we're never too busy for a friendly visit with you. Come on out and say hello!

See you in the Garden,
The Chandor Gardens Staff

Plant of the Month

Aloha Lily 'Maui' (Eucomis vandermerwei hybrid)
A generous donation of bulbs from CalBulbs® has brought a delightful surprise for garden visitors and staff alike. We've seen Eucomis (usually called Pineapple Lily) before, but not like these! Aloha Lilies are larger and more robust than other Eucomis, and the coconut-scented flowers even attract butterflies. We've paired them with red caladiums to enhance their bold, exotic appearance.

While the species is native to South Africa, these amazing hybrids were developed and cultured in Moss Landing, California, a coastal town about 15 miles north of Monterey.

Wet Wall Weally Works Well

Thanks to support from the always altruistic Parker County Master Gardeners, we now have a cooling system for our little greenhouse. They raised and donated the money for the wet wall system, which we meticulously installed in house, with lots of help from community service volunteers. Initial readings show the system has lowered daytime temperatures about 40 degrees (hallelujah!), allowing us to finally utilize the greenhouse during the summer. (We used to vacate it from mid-May to late October.) We've already begun propagating plants for display in the garden this fall.

Above: The wet wall acts like a giant evaporative cooler to tame the oppressive heat in the greenhouse.

VIP Visitors

You never know who is going to walk into the garden, and the other day it was internationally famous antique rose expert Mike Shoup and his lovely wife, Jean. Mike owns the Antique Rose Emporium in Independence, Texas, and is the author of the book, Empress of the Garden.

Time for Caladiums!

Once again, our friends at Abbott IPCO have helped us out with loads of lovely, luscious leaves to paint the garden with cool colors right through the heat of summer. Enjoy!
