Secrets from the Garden

Chandor Gardens Newsletter - April 2018

Spring is well underway in the gardens. Indeed, we are seeing the return of songbirds and butterflies in addition to the flowers and greenery. It seems like just yesterday, Chandor Gardens was filled with delicate little buds, the tentative promise of a brighter future in the gardens, and have they ever fulfilled on it! The gardens are awash with color and fragrance, and it couldn't have come at a better time as April is also a great month weather-wise for having photography done in the gardens, so call us at 817-613-1700 to schedule a session today.

Keep up with us on Facebook and we’ll keep you posted there too.

See you in the Garden,
The Chandor Gardens Staff

What's Going on in the Gardens?

Fountain Restoration

We are so excited to showcase this current restoration. It may not look like much now that it's in the construction stages, but we are enormously proud to have enlisted Michael Pavlovksy's help and skill in doing a complete restoration of Douglas Chandor's large Dragon Fountain, the centerpiece of the Sunken Garden! This will be no easy undertaking as it involves using hand-fired tiles, meticulous bronze work, and even vintage soda bottles! Douglas was a vanguard of reusing and repurposing materials long before it was something that was encouraged, which is such a fun and enriching thing to promote, but it has certainly brought with it its share of complications when it comes to restoring something that used materials that were available in the 1940's, but not necessarily now. To accomplish this feat, Michael will be using both the original fountain for the designs, as well as Douglas Chandor's original blueprints to not only do a complete restoration, but to finish Douglas's artistic vision.

Douglass Chandor's Fountain Design Drawings

For Michael Pavlovsky, the quest to create sculpture is clear: "Artists have an innate need to express and to create. We are fortunate when life allows us to pursue this calling. Sculpture is a lifelong passion for me. I would not want to do anything else. It is the most compelling and beautiful form of artistic expression."

For more information on Michael Pavlovsky, visit his website at http://www.michaelpavlovsky.com/, and for updates on the Dragon Fountain Restoration's progress, follow us on Facebook and watch for our monthly newsletters!

Plant of the Month

Lady Banks Roses on Pergola
Lady Banks Roses

Lady Banks Roses (Rosa banksiae 'Lutea')
This climber features double blossoms, a light fragrance, and an all-around lovely springtime display. Here at Chandor Gardens, they adorn our pergola that frames Douglas' historical court yard on it's west side. They provide some nice shade, an excellent backdrop for photography, and their drifts of yellow flowers are unmatched in delicate beauty making it a perfect entrance to the gardens. They are also a good substitute for the popular (but hard to control) Trumpet Vine. Come see them while they are in bloom for some inspiration, or just to take in something beautiful! And while you're at it, take a moment to enjoy the blooming bulbs planted just underneath!

Splashes of Color

Annual Color
A beautiful border of annual color, put in by our much-appreciated Parker County Master Gardeners, keeps the east side of the Courtyard looking fresh and different all year long. While often overlooked in terms of importance, annuals really do carry a lot of the weight in maintaining color and curb appeal in gardens, whether in a big botanical garden, or in your home's landscape design. They can be differently styled depending on the season, and add a changing interest to flower beds and planters, so there is always something new to look at or to accent perennials. The Parker County Master Gardeners know this, and they keep Chandor Gardens blooming all year long!

It's here, it's happening! The redbuds are blooming! Coming in varying shades of purple, pink, and magenta, these Texas natives are certainly a show-stopper in any gardens. We have many of these planted throughout the gardens ensuring that there is color in every direction one could possibly look! Spring really is such a momentous time in the gardens, and you don't want to miss it. Unfortunately, Texas springs are short-lived, but when they are here, it's nothing short of magical.

Another Redbud
This one delicately draping our smaller waterfall, makes for such a peaceful little spot in the gardens. Directly to the north of this is a handmade gazebo sitting area, and is a perfect spot to read a book, do some bird watching, or to just take in this lovely little waterfall. This little corner of the gardens features a more demure spring aesthetic, and is such a quiet and relaxing spot. If you wish to take a minute to reflect or enjoy some time out in the natural elements, this little gem hidden away on our northeast side is calling your name.

Parting Shot

A beautiful tulip, opened to embrace the sun, is part of a bigger group lining our entryway to the gardens as if to say "welcome, feel free to leave your worries here for a while." Chandor Gardens is truly a breath of fresh air, both literally and figuratively, and we know that the stresses of everyday life and work can seem overwhelming, so we want to invite you to come in, take a moment and a breath, and take in the gardens. There is something truly peaceful in this little oasis hidden in town making it feel like an entire new world once you step inside. If you want a respite to relax, Chandor Gardens is a perfect little getaway, whether you spend a few minutes or a few hours inside its ethereal boundaries. There is always something new to see and take in here in the gardens, so you might want to bring a camera. See you soon!
