Secrets from the Garden
Chandor Gardens Newsletter - June 2018
Summer is in full-swing here at Chandor Gardens, and that means there is quite a lot to look at and take in. Summer means flowers, and we have a ton right now! The air smells heavenly and the beds are awash in beautiful color and would make for excellent family photography backdrops.
In addition to the gardens being extra vibrant right now, we also have some updates. Michael Pavlovsky is well underway on his restoration of Douglas Chandor's Dragon Fountain and can be seen in his endeavor most any day in the Gardens should anyone wish to catch a sculptor at work.
Additionally, the Chandor Gardens Foundation is pleased to present their PapaPalooza event on Father's Day, Sunday, June 17th. It will be held at the Heritage Park Amphitheater from 11 am to 7 pm and will be a wonderful way to spend some quality fun time with the dads in your lives. An enormous variety of entertainment is planned for the day including music, food vendors, shopping, face painting, cold brew, professional football legends, toy expo, geocaching, obstacle course, golfing challenges, basketball, a leaf blower race, magicians, pet adoptions, and wet and dry bounce houses! There will also be raffles, a dunking booth, field day games, police/fire/SWAT simulators, a 5k and a fun run, nerf dart battles, wild west games, photo ops, competitions, an exotic petting zoo, and a vote for "Top Pop!" Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children (ages 3 and under are free).
This promises to be a Father's Day to remember, so come on out to Heritage Park, bring your sunscreen and your camera, and make it awesome!
Keep up with us on Facebook and we’ll keep you posted there too. See you at PapaPalooza and in the Gardens, The Chandor Gardens Staff

A NIGHT IN OLD HOLLWOOD, the Chandor Foundation Gala in April, was a magical evening with elegantly dressed guests and "Hollywood stars" dressed for the costume contest. The Dynamic Swing Machine, a 19-piece big band and vocalist, provided show tunes and dance music, as our Master of Ceremonies, Dave Cowley, kept the show going. The money raised went to help pay for the replacement of the huge, iconic Cedar Elm shading the Grey Garden that was destroyed in the January ice storm.

Dragon Fountain Restoration Update
|
|
|
|
Fort Worth artist, Michael Pavlovsky, is making great headway on the restoration of the Dragon Fountain.
It hasn't been easy; we had to source several hundred vintage soda bottles and hundreds of marbles just to complete the base alone! However, the project is progressing well and it's fascinating to watch him at work. Luckily, there is a really convenient overlook just south of the Tiered Fountain that provides a perfect vantage point to watch a current artist pay homage to a past artist in restoring and preserving his work.
For more information on Michael Pavlovsky, please visit his website at http://www.michaelpavlovsky.com/
We are so appreciative to Michael for the work he has put into this project and very excited to see the finished project!

Magnolia grandiflora
Is there anything more stately, iconic, or quintessentially southern as the majestic Magnolia tree? Early summer is it's moment to shine, and does it ever!
The air is redolent from the scent of it's blossoms throughout the garden, and the bumblebees are happy little workers buzzing in and out of the burgeoning blooms.
Some Magnolias fare better than others in our area due to their love of high humidity and DFW's lack of rain. Specifically, the Little Gem Magnolia does particularly well here and we have several growing along the east side of the house for viewing! The Little Gem doesn't get quite as big as a standard Magnolia (20 to 25 ft. tall, 10 to 15 ft. wide), but that's not always a bad thing as it therefore requires less water than a standard specimen, and it is placed with more ease into a landscape design without overpowering the ultimate design.
Chandor Gardens has many Magnolias in bloom right now, so come on out, give them a sniff, snap a picture, and enjoy the elegance that is early summer in Texas.

Oakleaf Hydrangea The Oakleaf Hydrangeas are in full bloom right now! This plant is not a true Texas native, but it is still a great plant to use in this area because it handles Texas's seasons and weather like a champ, and it's also non-invasive! We have groups of these growing throughout the garden, and their presence is so welcome. The delicate, papery blossom clusters sit like little snowdrifts on the branches, making them a wonderful backdrop for summer perennial blooms and accents.

Hibiscus syriacus Summer is here, summer is colorful, and summer smells heavenly. Admittedly, it's also HOT, but the trade-off is that everything is erupting in a riot of color and scents. Take this Hibiscus syriacus; it's coloration almost seems to glow and radiate. Mature specimens can get to be about 8-12 feet tall, making them an excellent focal point in any garden.

Blue Larkspur Blue Larkspur blossoms provide a vivid, yet somehow dainty view from the pergola with their lacy foliage and shockingly hued blue flowers. These gorgeous blossoms make an excellent backdrop to photos; to inquire about photo shoots in the garden, please call us at 817-613-1700.

Purple Porterweed How cool is this Purple Porterweed? These plants are in the verbena family and they are an interesting addition to any garden, bringing the eye upwards with their vibrant inflorescence and adding interest in that range. We love how everything comes alive during the summer in the gardens, and how things never look exactly the same visit to visit. That's kind of the beauty of Chandor Gardens, everything is changing and evolving as the seasons turn, creating a little oasis of life and seasonally different beauty.

A Particular Ginkgo Biloba Tree
There is something really fascinating about the growth habit of this particular Ginkgo biloba tree. It's just so compact and full, and yet so tiny. Ginkgoes are basically the oldest living tree species on the planet, having remained virtually unchanged since the time of the dinosaurs. Not only that, but they are surprisingly resilient. There are Ginkgoes that were planted in Nagasaki and Hiroshima prior to the atomic bombs being dropped. Those particular trees are one of the very few things that survived the immediate blast, and they are still living today! If you have kids who are obsessed with dinosaurs or fossils, bring them out to Chandor Gardens so they can see examples of plants that were living in very much the same way at the time that the dinosaurs roamed the earth.
See you soon!
