Secrets from the Garden

Chandor Gardens Newsletter - July 2018

Happy July from the staff here at Chandor Gardens! It's hot out, and summer is in full swing, but thanks to our amazing and hardworking team the gardens are beautiful, lush, and green!

It may be warm, but there are no shortages of shady and breezy hideaways out in the gardens. It may be quiet around here at the moment, but not for long because we have our fall events coming up.

On Sunday, October 21st, we will be hosting our annual Autumn Art Walk. That seems like a ways away, but now's the time to reserve your spot as a vendor! If you are an artist or a craftsman, if you paint, sing, create something to sell, we want you! To reserve a spot as a vendor, all you have to do is call us at (817) 613-1700, and we will get you set up! The cost for admission to attend this event for the general public is just $1 per person; the cost to be a vendor at this event is simply to bring us two large bags of premium candy, because...

The Sunday after the Autumn Art Walk (Oct 28th), we will be hosting our Goblins in the Garden event from 12-4! This event is $2 a person, but children in costume get in for free! This is a fright-free family Halloween event, and children will be able to walk through the gardens and trick-or-treat, as well as participate in a costume contest, games, photo ops, and more! Make sure to mark your calendars for both of these events, as they are definitely a crowd favorite.

As always, we are so honored and happy to have a community of people who are so active in participating with us for our events. We couldn't do it if it weren't for you! Stay tuned to our monthly newsletter and follow us on Facebook for more information on these events and goings-on in the gardens!

Keep up with us on Facebook and we’ll keep you posted there too.

See you in the Gardens,
The Chandor Gardens Staff

Dragon Fountain Restoration

Fort Worth artist, Michael Pavlovsky, continues his painstaking work of recreating Douglas Chandor's iconic Dragon Fountain. We thought you would like to see a few photos of the work in progress.

Since March, we have acquired around 160 vintage soda bottles along with hundreds of marbles for this project. You can clearly see the artistry, skill, and attention to detail that Michael employs when working on the piece.

We plan to invite everyone out to see the finished fountain in the next few months. Stay tuned for the big unveiling!

For more information on Michael Pavlovsky, please visit his website at http://www.michaelpavlovsky.com/

We are so appreciative to Michael for the work he has put into this project and very excited to see the finished project!

Plant of the Month

Caladium
Caladium

Caladiums

Clouds of caladiums blanket beds throughout the gardens with their dreamy and floaty leaves that manage to be both large, yet delicate and dainty, particularly with morning dew clinging to their leaf-tips for just a moment of ephemeral tranquility before the heat of the day kicks in.

Caladiums come in a variety of colors and sizes and can be used just about anywhere in the garden. We have masses of these plants scattered around in varying beds, and their mounds of uniformity make for excellent photography backdrops, as well as highlighting any summer blooms that may be in the vicinity.

This particular plant really is the MVP of July gardens, bringing both texture and color even in the heat of the summer.

Around the Garden

Coleus

Coleus
A coleus peaks out from under a little birdhouse on the east side of the gardens. This plant may be small, but the texture and vibrancy is unmatched, and since coleus is available in tons of different sub-species, there is no shortage to what one could do with it in a garden. We have made use of several different varieties of this ubiquitous plant, and they are on display throughout the garden, if one knows where to look.

Annual Color

Annual Color
A beautiful arrangement of annual color brightens up the pathways alongside the western edge of the bowling green, attracting swarms of beautiful butterflies and the occasional bouncing little bumblebee. There are always multiple balancing acts going on in a garden, between flora and fauna, sun and water, and even annuals and perennials. Each add their own brushstrokes that, when combined, create an overall work of art.

Crape Myrtles

Crape Myrtles
Crape Myrtles are in full bloom this summer, bringing some bright color upwards into one's direct line of vision. We have many magenta specimen throughout the grounds as well as an entire pathway lined by tall statuesque Muskogee Crape Myrtles in the southwestern portion of the property. The only thing dreamier than their fluffy flower clusters is when they start to drop in a light and floaty shower of reds, pinks, and purples.
