Secrets from the Garden

Chandor Gardens Newsletter - August 2018

July has slipped into August almost as imperceptibly as the occasional brisk breeze that descends from the north to break summer's heat, if only for a moment, as we start our slow and ephemeral transition into autumn. The weather may still be hot, but those earlier evenings and longer nights carry with them the promise of crisp mornings, the scent of fallen leaves, and the occasional moment of seeing one's breath in the air. Fall will be here before we know it and for us, it's time to begin preparing for our festive fall events!

On October 21st we will host our annual Autumn Art Walk. The gardens will be resplendent in fall flowers, pumpkins, and gourds, making for a perfect autumnal backdrop while you browse through local artisans and craftspeople showcasing and selling their wares. Live music and wonderful food are the ideal accompaniments to top off a perfect afternoon in the Gardens. Then, on October 28th, we will host our spook-free Halloween event, Goblins in the Gardens. This family-friendly event allows for trick-or-treating without scares as well as yard games, costume contests, and other fun activities!

Come on out and enjoy the last vestiges of summer in the Gardens and all it has to offer. A festive autumn is just around the corner!

Keep up with us on Facebook and we’ll keep you posted there too.

See you in the Gardens,
The Chandor Gardens Staff

Plant of the Month

Plant of the Month: Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo Biloba
Ginkgo trees are some of the most scientifically-interesting specimens a garden can have, and we have several here at Chandor Gardens. This compact little specimen at the south end of the courtyard is especially interesting to view with its compact canopy and long, thin trunk. This prehistoric tree from the time of the dinosaurs is all but extinct in the wild, but gardens across the world are keeping these long-lived primordial trees alive for future generations to come. It won't be too long now before fall arrives and their leaves turn their bright gold colors for fall, and drop almost immediately after, so come see them soon!

Remembering Our Dear Friend, LaDonna

On July 1, 2018, a longtime friend of Chandor Gardens, LaDonna Stockstill, passed away.

One of the original four members of the Parker County Master Gardener Association, LaDonna was truly one of our Chandor family. Throughout the years, LaDonna graciously shared her talent as an accomplished gardener with us here at Chandor Gardens.

As a tribute to her, the Parker County Master Gardeners along with Chandor staff have transformed a garden bed, in the small alcove nestled to the west of the bowling green and adorned with a lovely pair of grape motif gates, into a very fitting memorial. The area (pictured below) is awash in fresh color and vibrancy with help from annual Impatiens and Begonias, and variegated Ginger plants that lend a touch of architectural texture and color to the stone wall behind. Shaded by large oaks and boxwoods, this little garden room is dedicated to our dear friend.

Around the Garden

Turk's Cap

Turk's Cap
It's that time of Summer when the Turk's Cap blossoms turn into sweet edible fruits! These red flowers attract hummingbirds and butterflies, and look so cheery in a landscape. Growing easily whether planted in sun or shade, this plant is a must-have for Texas gardens.

Seasonal Planters

Seasonal Color
Flanking either side of the front door of the sprawling Palladian mansion are two gorgeous planters that are always filled with seasonal color. This time of the year sees the juxtaposition of the viridian greens of the variegated Chlorophytum comosum alongside the purple plum hues of the Tradescantia pallida all intermixed in a striking display of end-of-summer color. Located on the east side of the home, the large emerald-colored front door makes for a beautiful backdrop for portraits!

porcelain statue

Serene Statue
A porcelain statue of a serene-looking woman graces the eastern entrance of the Chinese bridge that leads up to the home's front door. She's posed looking off into the distance, towards the Labyrinth with its Scholar's Stone and large Staghorn Ferns adorning the stately Cedar Elm tree. The scent of fresh greenery and florals fills the air, and the babbling little falls in the canal mix with the sounds of birds chirping and bumblebees buzzing to serenade the garden in a peaceful symphony of nature, creating a mental and sensory reset.

Parting Shot

Mount Cox waterfall

The Mount Cox waterfall at the northeastern edge of the property sits tucked away in a grotto graced in dappled late-afternoon sun on a breezy Sunday. Moss and ferns alight on rock ledges as butterflies pollinate the mass of annual blossoms that frame the entrance. Greenery peeks out around the edges of the stones that form the walkway to help create this ethereal entrance to a waterfall that would not look out of place in a woodland forest somewhere, untouched by time or human hands.
