Secrets from the Garden

Chandor Gardens Newsletter - September 2018

September is already here, taking us all rather by surprise if we're being honest. It seems like just yesterday we were lamenting the heat (remember those 105 degree days?) and wishing for the cooler days of autumn. It would appear that our wishes have come true; autumn is here, bringing with it cooler temperatures, soothing rain showers, and a reminder that our fall events are coming up soon!

Our Autumn Art Walk will be held on Sunday, October 21st and we still have room for more vendors! If you are interested in displaying and selling your work give us a call and we'll fill you in on all the details.

Additionally, Sunday, October 28th we host our annual Goblins in the Gardens. This spook-free, family-friendly event is always a crowd pleaser so mark your calendar and come out for an afternoon of fun at BOOtiful Chandor Gardens!

We hope everyone had a wonderful summer and that you have an even more fantastic fall!

Keep up with us on Facebook and we’ll keep you posted there too.

See you in the Gardens,
The Chandor Gardens Staff

Plant of the Month

Plant of the Month: Evergreen Wisteria

Evergreen Wisteria
While Wisteria is known for its sweetly fragrant springtime blooms, not everyone knows about it's deeper-hued and later-blooming sibling, the evergreen variety. This variety is vibrantly colored and blooms in September instead of April, bringing impeccable coloring and altitude to a fall garden. This variety is true to its name in that it's green color stays fast through the brisk winter months. It truly is a beautiful and less-common addition to a fall garden.

Ashley Deal's Memorial Garden

Ashley Deal's Memorial Garden

Ashley Deal's memorial garden is being made new and fresh with bright flowers to attract butterflies and hummingbirds. A new walkway and sitting area showcases the plaque made in her memory, provided by the City of Weatherford and the Parker County Master Gardeners. We should have this completed in the next few weeks, and we'd love to have you sit a spell and take in the fresh air and the fresh garden, and think of little Ashley.

Around the Garden

Sometimes, gardening is more than gardening. A garden can be an oath of life and change. A gust of wind could be an offer of freedom. Fall is the precursor for renewal. And a bud is a promise of a more beautiful tomorrow.

Moon Gate

Historic Moon Gate
A stunning view of the western side of the historic moon gate makes the perfect photo frame, it's just missing YOU! Not only that, but there are countless other picturesque spots throughout the garden, tucked away in enchanting corners here and there if one knows where to look (or gets a map in the office). If you're interested in photography in the gardens, please call us at 817-613-1700 for more information!

Umbrella Grass

Umbrella Grass
Umbrella grass gives a strikingly proud statement throughout the grounds, making for an interesting specimen that stands tall in and around the various water features. Some of the sprays at the top are bigger than one's head! It's always a crowd-pleased. Growing 3-4 feet tall and thriving in marshy, shadier areas, these plants are a must-have for the shade gardener. Come see our Cyperus alternifolius soon, for it will retire to a wintry slumber before you know it!

Parting Shot

Parting Shot

The juxtaposition of this sweet little Japanese Kerria flower against the beautiful courtyard background truly shows the summation of a garden. One cannot have a garden without the individual plants, but by the same token, the individual plants together paint an extraordinary landscape of art and nature coming together as one.

Whether you take in the small things, see the big picture, or manage to do both, the intricacy in either is always a wondrous thing of beauty and complexity, similar to the way the individual brushstrokes go on to form a mural of epic proportions, and what is a garden if not another form of art? Here at Chandor, the line of scientific pragmatism and creative artistry are constantly blended, and, well, we like it that way.
