Secrets from the Garden

Chandor Gardens Newsletter - September 2019

September is here, and it will hopefully bring some cooler weather and autumnal color with it. August finally brought the heat, but our employees worked as diligently as ever to keep the gardens lush and green. It will be perfect garden weather over the next few months, so make sure to come see us in our full autumn splendor!

We do have a few notes about some upcoming events! First, on October 12th, the Chandor Gardens Foundation will be hosting "A Night in Venice" Masquerade Ball at the Gardens! You'll be able to dance the night away to the Big Band sound of Dynamic Swing Machine, relish hearty hors d'oeuvres by Aaron's Catering, and enjoy champagne, wine or beer from the cash bar. Dave Cowley will be Master of Ceremonies for the evening. There are prizes for masks and costumes, along with other amusements and surprises throughout the evening. Individual tickets are $100. (The reserved tables of eight are sold out). If you haven't purchased your tickets to this event, you may do so by visiting https://www.eventbrite.com/e/a-night-in-venice-tickets-64017612402

During this event, there will be a drawing to win a 2020 Kawasaki Brute Force 300 ATV (MSRP $4,299). Raffle proceeds support preservation and site expansion at Chandor Gardens. Raffle Tickets are $20 each or 6 for $100. The winner will be drawn at the Masquerade Ball; however, the winner of the raffle does not need to be present to be eligible to claim their prize! For information on how to purchase raffle tickets, please visit https://chandorgardensfoundation.rallyup.com/chandorraffle2019.

Then, on October 20th, we are pleased to host our annual Autumn Art Walk from 12-4 pm! Admission is $1 per person. You will be able to stroll through the garden, visit the Mansion, and shop from the artists and craftsmen who are set up throughout the garden. Live music will serenade you, and there is food available for purchase from Shep's Food Truck! Additionally, we still have a few spots left for vendors! Scroll down the Newsletter for vendor information.

Finally, our last public holiday event for 2019 will be our Holiday Open House, held on Saturday, December 14th. There will be festive snacks, live musical entertainment, and the Mansion will be decorated to the hilt for the holiday season. This event is held each year in conjunction with the Parker County Heritage Society's Candlelight Tour of Homes. Though it is free to tour Chandor Gardens, you will need to purchase tickets to see the other historic properties on the tour. This is one of our most popular events, so you do not want to miss it! Stay tuned for more information on the event as well as a link to buy tickets for the tour.

Mark your calendars for what is sure to be our most beautiful event season yet!

Around the Garden

Chinese Woman Statue

Demure Statue

This demure statue of a Chinese woman is one of two statuary figurines that frame the eastern entrance to the little Chinese bridge above the canal.

The bridge can be located immediately outside the original front door of the mansion on the eastern side of the home.

Her delicate face seems to evoke feelings of serenity and somehow curiosity in equal measure. What could she be pondering?

Ina's Walk

Ina's Walk

A September garden is a lovely garden, as evidenced here on Ina's Walk, a stone and brick pathway through the southwestern-most section of the garden. Douglas Chandor installed this sweet path as a means for his wife to more easily visit her mother. He inscribed it with a love note in Latin, translated to say, "May this little garden flourish, consecrated to Ina in the year of Our Lord Edward the Eight, forevermore." This garden is a veritable love story that is retold through the romances of all the brides and grooms who have come through in the years since. This legacy of love lives on through the dedication and care of our staff. May our stories flourish alongside theirs, forevermore.

Bowling Green

Bowling Green

The Bowling Green, dappled with equal amounts of sun and shade, provides the perfect backdrop for many a sweet moment, be it the union of two enamored souls, mischievous children aching for a footrace, or an elderly couple taking a moment to reflect on their decades of happiness together. Whether you're looking for a place to make a lasting memory or for a quiet picnic, we can't recommend this location enough.

Stone Lantern

Silent Sentinel

A handmade stone lantern stands as a silent sentinel alongside the canal, standing watch over the beautiful koi fish that glide with ballerina-like grace in the tranquil waters.

Please visit us in the gift shop for a bag of food for them! Fish food is only $1 but is subject to both availability and our gluttonous fish's dietary needs.

Plant of the Month

Turk's Cap

Turk's Cap
Turk's Cap is September's Plant of the Month due to its reliability, and it's resilience. This Texas native perennial is able to withstand intense summer heat and the deepest of winters with a strength that is nearly unmatched in a garden. It also has a unique ability to flourish in total sun to solid shade. It will bloom on schedule - the scarlet rosettes seen here, even in completely shady conditions! After the blooms die out, it produces a tiny little fruit. The fruit is similar in taste to a tart apple for any critter (or intrepid human) who wants to taste a different treat of the foraged variety. These plants grow to be around 3-4 feet tall and wide and are a welcome addition to any garden.

Frequent Visitor

Visiting Hawk

This majestic hawk is no stranger to the Gardens. These birds typically come back year after year to nest and hunt in the same areas. On a recent walk through the Gardens, we had the pleasure of this lovely fellows company.

Important Dates

Stephanie Tree Trimming

We want to remind everyone that we have some important upcoming dates. The Gardens are closed on Monday, November 11th in honor of Veteran's Day and again on Thursday, November 28th through Sunday, December 1st, for the Thanksgiving Holidays. You can squeeze in a peek of the Gardens from November 12th through the 27th, but the Chandor Mansion will be closed to visitors during that time. This is to ensure that we can create the most magical winter wonderland possible south of the North Pole! As you can see in the picture of our Administrative Assistant, Stephanie, this is no mean feat. We put up nine or more trees every year, in addition to a wonderful little English holiday village scene of vintage miniatures! There is not a section of the mansion that misses our festive treatment, so you will definitely want to visit us in December.

Parting Shot

Woman Statue

This gorgeous bronze statue of a nude woman is nestled in the Boxwood Garden which abuts the large studio window in the Great Room of the Chandor Mansion. When the Chandors lived here, the eleven-foot studio window provided the northern light that Douglas needed to paint. This statue is a bit of a mystery as she was lost for many years and then returned to the estate by an anonymous donor. She sits atop a beautiful base fountain that was constructed from old tractor parts; which sums up the inherent joy of this garden. That is to say; taking that which is old and finding the hidden beauty within it. That's what we do in this antique garden. We breathe new life into every corner, building on the foundation set for us almost a century ago by an English artist in his Texas garden. We owe him so much.
