Secrets from the Garden

Chandor Gardens Newsletter - October 2019

It's October, and cooler weather is finally here! Beautiful roses, fall-blooming azaleas, and autumn perennials that have waited all summer finally get to show off their blooms. Painted Lady and Swallowtail butterflies are abundant in the Gardens, taking advantage of the last of our summer flowers before they go into their winter dormancy. Fall color is just around the corner and will soon paint the leaves with bright yellow, orange, and gold. It's time to revisit the Gardens and take advantage of all this beauty before the onset of winter.

October is a busy month for us, with tons of exciting events packed into a mere thirty-one days.

"A Night in Venice" Masked Ball, a fabulous evening of entertainment, music, dancing, and fine food takes place on October 12th, followed by our Annual Autumn Art Walk, showcasing local artisans' exceptional talent, on October 20th. We close out the month with a free concert by the young, innovative, PUBLIQuartet, applauded as "a perfect encapsulation of today's trends in chamber music," and brought to us by the Cliburn, on October 26th. Scroll down for all the details you need to know about these amazing October offerings!

We look forward to seeing each and every one of you at our spectacular fall events!

To ensure you stay up to date on events and happenings in the Garden, follow us on Facebook and Instagram.

See you in the gardens,

Around the Garden

Coleus provides exquisite fall color throughout the gardens. Coleus come in almost every color in the rainbow and are a great way to have some annual color throughout a Texas landscape. While classified as annuals, many Coleus can be brought inside and grown as a house plant. So, if you're not ready to give up your colorful plant come cooler weather, try your hand at indoor growing! Here in the gardens, they are growing in droves and would make a stunning background for photography. To schedule your photography during open hours, please call us at 817-613-1700!

Dragon Fountain

Dragon Fountain
The Dragon Fountain looks regal as always with it's deep-hued waters surrounded by ancient stone and canopied in green. This lovely fountain is steeped in history. It was originally constructed by Douglas Chandor in the 1940s using Chi-Ling (dragon) statues acquired in New York City, Coke and 7-Up bottles, colored marbles, and handmade ceramic tiles made by Chandor and fired in the European oven that was originally in the Mansion's kitchen. The original statues were restored in 2009 by Fort Worth artist Michael Pavlovsky and placed inside the home for preservation.

Bronze replicas adorn the fountain now, which was completely rebuilt in 2018, again by the talented Michael Pavlovsky. This undertaking was no easy task and required sourcing antique soda bottles and marbles and countless hours. However, it is a testament to love and effort, and we couldn't be prouder and more honored to have the keeping of its care. An intrepid visitor interested in viewing the fountain need only venture south from the Mansion; there is no missing this showstopper!

Succulent Arrangement

Scintillating Succulents
A potted succulent arrangement is bathed in early afternoon sunlight alongside the northern end of the Courtyard pergola. While these may be considered a summer staple, their vibrant colors become most apparent in the fall. This is when the temperature fluctuations cause the most color-changes! A trick to planting succulents in an arrangement like this is to make sure that you're planting succulents that have like watering and light needs. A common misconception is that succulents are like cacti and don't need much water and love direct light, but this is often not the case. In fact, these are strategically placed to avoid the blistering western sunlight that comes in the late afternoon. This prevents leaf scorching and die-off. For grouping ideas, come on out! We have a fabulous succulent collection and are always happy to show it off.

Plant of the Month

Fall Aster

Fall Aster!
Like clockwork, these diminutive little flowers bloom every October heralding the end of the summer heat. They always seem to open as the last vestiges of summer are winding down and offer some hope of cooler weather and relief just around the corner. The weatherman might let you down, but ask a seasoned gardener; there are ways to predict what Mother Nature has up her sleeve. The blooming Asters, combined with the resurgence of butterflies, can only mean one thing: winter is on its way.

Parting Shot

Swallowtail Butterfly on Purple Porterweed Flowers

A gorgeous Giant Swallowtail Butterfly alights on the Purple Porterweed blooms on the western wall of the Parlor. October is a key month for migratory species, as this is the time where butterflies and birds are in our area from the north, escaping the winter chill. They are a timely reminder that even though it may be warm and sultry outside, it won't last. The cold is coming and bringing with it winter wildlife and color. Come out to spend some time and enjoy the species as they are passing through the gardens. It'll be a while before they are back in our neck of the woods.
