Secrets from the Garden

Chandor Gardens Newsletter - November 2019

With cool nights and warm days and woodsmoke perfuming the air, before the frost and snowfall of winter, comes the glorious color and leaf showers of autumn. There is something beautiful in watching the Cedar Elm leaves float to the ground in a breeze, the little leaves turning in the air currents and catching the afternoon sunlight in shiny glints of color. It's as if it rains gold from the trees, giving the Gardens a fairytale atmosphere.

The Garden changes quickly these days, sometimes literally overnight. Things are happening right now that are worth a special trip out to see. The Ginkgo trees will soon light up in their short-lived blaze of golden glory, one of the surest signs of winter's impending arrival. The Pansies and Violas are starting to pop out in full force, and the Japanese Maples are just beginning to turn their vibrant hues of crimson and gold. Autumn will slide imperceptibly into winter, and the Garden will be flush with holly berries and showstopping sprays of Nandina berries, a perfect wintery backdrop for last-minute holiday photos!

We hope to see you soon, enjoying our cool weather Gardens!

To ensure you stay up to date on events and happenings in the Garden, follow us on Facebook and Instagram.

Warmest wishes,
The Chandor Gardens Staff

Changes in the Garden

Ganesh - In Sunlight Again

This perfect little elephant sculpture was handmade by Douglas Chandor himself and has been hidden behind a thick wall of bamboo. Our horticulturist and dedicated staff have cleared away the overgrowth so that he can now, once more, bask in the sunlight after years in darkness. We won't tell you where to find this gem; you'll simply have to come to take in the changes in the Garden and see what is being newly unearthed.

Parker County Master Gardeners

Wildflower Seed Mix - Parker County Master Gardeners

The Parker County Master Gardeners do a lot of work for Chandor Gardens. They assist us in general Garden clean-up, annual color change-outs, and the installation of new beds and attractions. They also often come during our public events to set up "Ask A Master Gardener" booths and dispense great information and wisdom to inquiring minds. Right now, they have provided us with Wildflower Seed packets to give away with Garden admissions while supplies last! Mid-fall (so right now) is the best time to lay seeds for spring blooms, so don't forget to grab a pack! For more information on the Master Gardener program, please visit https://www.pcmg-texas.org/

Plant of the Month

Purple Porterweed
Purple Porterweed

Purple Portweed - Stachytarphera frantzii
We have had a lot of questions about the amazing purple-blooming bush growing out front of the garden entrance and would like to introduce everyone to Stachytarphera frantzii, better known as "Purple Porterweed!" This medium-sized zone 9-11 perennial grows about 4 feet high and 3 feet wide and produces tons of blooms. This plant is a repeat bloomer, blooming almost continuously from spring to late fall, and we can confirm that the bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds come from far and wide to visit this specimen. And for those of you in the country, this plant is deer resistant too. This lovely plant is really packing a punch in the garden right now, so come see it soon, for once the cold winds of winter arrive, it will be done until around May.

Parting Shot

Gulf Fritillary on Lantana

A last straggler of the autumnal migration south is seen getting sustenance for its voyage from a Camera Lantana bloom. This Gulf Fritillary Butterfly is a beautiful remnant of summer, and we will miss them until they return for spring. We have the rest of fall and all of winter ahead of us, but there will be many things to occupy our time and bring us joy until then. We at Chandor have the utmost hopes that you make many lasting and meaningful memories in the Gardens before autumn colors fade and fall away to make room for the holiday season. We encourage you to come out and get your own sustenance for the winter ahead, while we snuggle up and wait for spring's warmth.
