Cindy and David

Cindy and David, our full-time Grounds Crew, are hard at work preparing the Garden for spring and all its events. There's not a day where they aren't pruning, trimming, and removing and replacing old plants with new and fresh specimens. The Garden is looking better than ever, and we are all very excited to see the fruits of their labor come spring. If you tour the Gardens, don't be afraid to stop and say, "Hi!"

Liz, one of the Garden's Administrative Assistants, is seen here representing Chandor Gardens at 360 West Magazine's Luxury Bridal Fair this past month. We love hosting weddings, so if you haven't nailed down that special venue, we would be glad to give you a tour and a quote! To schedule your personal bridal tour, please call us at 817-613-1700, and we'll get you set up. If you're looking for an intimate and romantic wedding venue, we might be just the ticket as we only host one private event a day. We'd just love to make it yours.

"Las Pozas: Our Extraordinary Adventure to a Bizarre Surrealist Garden"

Edward James, an eccentric British aristocrat and poet, spent much of his life building a surrealist sculpture garden, called Las Pozas (meaning 'the pools'), in the remote mountains of Mexico. This bizarre surrealist garden, filled with soaring fantastical concrete sculptures set among natural water features, was Edward James' version of the 'Garden of Eden.'

Four friends traveled to find this hidden gem. Stephen Haydon, Horticulturist for the City of Weatherford, will share his personal photographs from the friends' adventure to Las Pozas. He will also tell about the fascinating life and journey of Edward James - from the hamlets of Chichester in West Sussex, England, to the exotic valley of Xilitla, Mexico, where orchids grow wild. Join us for a glass of wine and the captivating story of Edward and his Garden of Eden in the jungle.

Chandor Gardens Foundation Inc. is pleased to present the TCU Cantilena String Quartet on February 22nd, 2020, at Chandor Gardens Mansion, Weatherford, TX.

The TCU Cantilena String Quartet is a semi-professional ensemble comprised of undergraduate, graduate, and artist diploma students from the TCU School of Music. They have combined their diverse backgrounds into a shared musical experience described as energetic, passionate, and entertaining.

The following are the members of this group:

Manuel Alejandro Ordóñez - violinist from Cali, Colombia. He received his Bachelor's degree in Violin Performance from TCU and is currently pursuing his Artist Diploma at TCU. He is a student of Elisabeth Adkins and Hae-Rim Lee.

Plant of the Month

Winter Daphne

Winter Daphne (Daphne odora)
I am convinced that there is no smell sweeter on the face of the earth than that of a Winter Daphne in full bloom. However, not many people get the opportunity in their lives to smell this floral fragrance due to how notoriously difficult this species can be to grow. They are incredibly temperamental and don't tolerate root disturbance well at all. They are also very vulnerable to a variety of fungal pests, and they are a generally short-lived shrub, so we are very proud of how happy and gorgeous our specimen is. Indeed, due to its rarity in our corner of the world, it would be a shame to miss a plant nicknamed "thousand-mile scent" in its native Asian home, so you've got about two weeks to come to experience it. Don't delay!

Flowers in the Garden

mini daffodils
mini daffodills emerge

Narcissus (or Mini Daffodils), are one of the first spring bulbs to emerge from a frosty ground, and ours are not disappointing. Sprays of delicate white blooms are popping up in sweet little clusters throughout the grounds. Additionally, Tulips and Hyacinths are starting to poke up out of the brown earth, so we know that spring is tentatively making an early entrance, and barring any late-season freezes, we are in for a bright and colorful spring.

Helleborus - Lenten Rose

The Helleborus (Lenten Roses) are in full bloom right now. These gorgeous flowers are often easy to miss due to their diminutive stature as understory plants, but for a keen eye, these showy blossoms that come in a wide array of color (pink, burgundy, red, purple, white, and green) are a real treat. What's even better is that the blossoms of this plant last for weeks! These are planted throughout the east side of the Garden in patches, from the smaller of the two waterfalls to the southernmost bed on that side. Come and check out these sweetly beautiful blooms.

Parting Shot

This Nandina domestic is nestled in the rocky outcropping that makes up our iconic waterfall known as Mount Cox. There seems to be something poetically metaphorical about this shrub taking root and hold on the side of a rocky wall and flourishing there, one that could be applied to this entire Garden, honestly. The Garden wasn't always an oasis of shade and luxury. It started as a rocky pasture full of limestone, clay, and bedrock. But, someone with the necessary discerning eye, and a will stronger than the stones around him, turned it into a veritable paradise, the likes of which have never been seen before. Visitors from around the world come to see Douglas Chandor's "Paradise in a Cow Pasture" and marvel at his Garden that is still flourishing after almost 84 years.
