Secrets from the Garden

Chandor Gardens Newsletter - March 2020

February has slid into March with an ease that might convince some that spring has already sprung. While it's true that March 19th is the first day of spring, there generally remains a frost risk until about mid-April due to the capricious nature of North Texas weather. Provided we are spared any late-season frosts, the Tulips are set to bud and open around the end of this month, and the Lady Banks Roses have started budding out as well!

Spring is the season of events here at the Gardens. Our annual Spring Fling is coming up on March 29th from 12-4 pm. Vendors will be here selling art and artisanal goods, and we will have food vendors and live music as well. Then, in April, Theatre Off the Square brings Shakespeare to the Gardens with two special performances set for April 11th! Additionally, May 3rd is the date for the return of the American Portrait Society's fabulous "Face Off" event, in which seven artists are given three hours to complete a portrait of one of seven models posing in various locations in the Gardens. After the enthusiastic response from the art community and the public last year, we are so excited to offer this event a second time! Stay tuned for more information on the face-off next month and check out the rest of this newsletter for detailed information on all our upcoming festivities.

Soon the Garden will be flush in color and blooms making for a perfect backdrop for photos. To schedule photography during our open hours, please call us at 817-613-1700.

To ensure you stay up to date on events and happenings in the Garden, follow us on Facebook and Instagram.

We look forward to seeing you in our burgeoning spring Garden!

What's That Smell?
It's Our Plant of the Month!

Hyacinth

Hyacinth
If while wandering through the Garden, you catch a whiff of what can only be described as the purest of all spring scents and wish to know who the sweet culprit is, look no further than the Hyacinth blossoms! Blooming in shades of pink and lavender, these gorgeous clusters of blooms smell fabulous. However, like most blooming bulbs, they don't last long, so come on out soon and give them a sniff.

Blossoming Trees

Pear Tree

There are blooms as far as the eye can see throughout the Gardens! Whether you look up, down, or all around, there is something to catch your eye and your nose. Even the trees have blooms! Currently, the Pears are in bloom, but as they fade, Redbuds will be filling the Garden with fuchsia pinks. Spring Gardens are always changing with each day more stunning than the one before, so come out and watch the change unfurl before your very eyes.

Visitors in the Garden

Clara
Clara

Sweet little Clara visited the Garden, and her mother was kind enough to send us these photos of her exploring the grounds, visiting the Children's Door, and taking a moment to snack by the Mount Cox Waterfall.

The Garden is a perfect place to wander and get lost, whether it be in the winding green paths, or even in your own thoughts.

Parting Shot

Stone Lantern

On a stony outcropping sits an old Chinese lantern, with every bit the air of a sentinel about it. It has been watching the Gardens night and day for many seasons now.

The Gardens have been through a lot and seen much over the years. Whether it be weather events, the changing of the seasons and ages, or the births and deaths of multiple generations, the Gardens has endured through it all. It appears that the Gardens' foundation of stone runs deeper than just a literal interpretation.

We couldn't be more honored to be its stewards, much like this old lantern. Here's to natural beauty and quiet strength. Here's to Chandor Gardens!
