Secrets from the Garden

Chandor Gardens Newsletter - January 2021

Chandor Gardens is beyond excited to welcome in 2021! January is here with its occasionally brisk and blustery weather, but fret not; it won't last forever.
Spring is quickly approaching. Now is a time to prepare and plan, and we are doing a lot of that right now. We are preparing the gardens in accordance with the spectacular spring we are expecting. The Parker County Master Gardeners have assisted our staff in planting thousands of flowering bulbs throughout the gardens, and it won't be long before our perennials start their spring show. Mix in a few annuals, and all the new growth shows in abundance, and the gardens are transformed into a hidden paradise perfect for any photo sessions coming up!

Then, on April 7th, we will host our annual Spring Fling event in which the public can come out and shop from local artisans and craftsmen. If you are interested in becoming a vendor, please call us at 817-613-1700 or email Liz for more details.

See you in the Garden,
The Chandor Gardens Staff

Keep up with us on Facebook and Instagram and we'll keep you posted there too.

"As You Like It"

Theatre Off The Square

This past spring, we had planned to have the Theater Off the Square out to hold a public showing of William Shakespeare's "As You Like It," but Covid-19 had other plans. A year later, armed with more knowledge and preparedness, we have been given a second chance at hosting this highly entertaining event. This year, on April 9th and 10th, TOTS will come out to put on their delayed performance, and we could not be more excited to have them. More details will be available shortly, so stay tuned!

Pardon Our Construction - Paths

Pardon Our Construction

One of the biggest tasks we have undertaken for this year is the lifting and relaying of pathways. Over the last eight decades, the grounds have shifted and settled, and tree roots have spread out, which has caused our historic pathways to sink and buckle and become uneven in spots. We are renovating all the pathways throughout by lifting the stones up and out, leveling the ground underneath, and then placing the stones back to preserve the historic walkways so lovingly laid out by Douglas Chandor. We are currently working on the pathways at the northern end of the Bowling Green and around the Pixie Pond. As we move throughout the grounds, we will keep everyone abreast of our progress in this newsletter and on social media.

Plant of the Month

Ornamental Cabbages and Kales
Typically, we would feature an individual plant species, but honestly, anything that brings such a vibrant color and texture in a garden at this time of year deserves this title. Ornamental cabbages and kales are in the Brassica family, as are things like cauliflower, mustard, broccoli, lettuce, etc. These shown here are not for eating, however, due to their rather bitter taste. They are grown for show as they tolerate the cold weather exceedingly well. They look great both in beds and in potted arrangements!

A related note for those of you planning on planting edible veggies, next month is the time to plant your onions, brassicas, and potatoes. They need the chillier weather to produce the highest quality yields.

Happy gardening!

Chandor in the Snow

Chandor in the Snow

January started mild, but on the 10th, we were blessed with a romantic dusting of snow that enchanted the entire Garden into a winter wonderland! Our demure statues, vibrant evergreens, and pastoral slopes all looked otherworldly in a blanket of sparkling white. The ethereal quality was enhanced by the constant and gentle snowfall and a distinct lack of blustery wind. An almost silent landscape was created, more reminiscent of the mountains of Colorado than of north Texas.

Bowling Green Winter Scene

Bowling Green Winter Scene

The image of the Bowling Green sitting under the snowy layers in this haunting-yet-picturesque vignette is beautiful. Douglas Chandor created the Garden layout specifically to make the most of the reflectivity of light from all the water features. This seems to be enhanced by the glittering flakes delicately adorning the water features.

Parting Shot

Parting Shot - Small, Snowy Waterfall

In this time of constant uncertainty, it becomes easy to feel overwhelmed and upset, but this picture of the snow falling against the backdrop of the shadowy Small Falls provides the perfect metaphor for the duality of life. The falling snow certainly is beautiful, and it is easy to get caught up in the joy of the flurries. But I would caution against giving the flakes all the credit for creating beauty, for, were it not for the dark shadows behind them, there would be no contrast with which to view them. Shadows serve to highlight the light, and this writer thinks there is something poignant to ponder in that. As we go into 2021 with tentative hope and optimism, it is our sincere hope that there are joy and light in your life.
