Secrets from the Garden

Chandor Gardens Newsletter - March 2021

According to the age-old adage, March is supposed to come "in like a lion and out like a lamb," right? The last few weeks have been difficult for everyone weather-wise, and we felt the effects here at the Garden as well. But we are picking up and dusting off, and our outstanding staff is working nonstop to get us back on track for spring. Thankfully, the bulbs are still barely springing forth, so it appears that they may not have been too heavily impacted by the deep freeze we sustained. With a little warmth and a little luck, we may soon have colorful seas of Tulips and Hyacinths yet!

Remember, on March 20th, we will host our annual Spring Fling event in which the public can come out and shop from local artisans and craftsmen. If you are interested in becoming a vendor, please call us at 817-613-1700 or email at for more details. Vendor spots are filling fast!

Keep up with us on Facebook and Instagram and we'll keep you posted there too.

See you in the Garden,
The Chandor Gardens Staff

Garden Staff
Preparing for the Deep Freeze

Staff preparing Chandor Gardens for the deep freeze weather

The weather may have been blustery and cold, but our dedicated staff was prepared. Prior to February's deep freeze, they set out to protect all the tender Garden specimens from the icy breath of winter. Not only that, but they were doing so in the chilly wind with smiles on their faces! (You'll have to trust us that David is smiling under his winter gear.)

We couldn't be the beautiful and lush Garden we are without such outstanding crew members. We would like to publicly thank them for their hard work and diligence.

Update on Pathway Restoration

Ina's Walk Restoration

We have started the restoration of Ina's Walk, and we are so excited in anticipation of seeing it when it is completed! Ina's Walk is the oldest installation in Chandor Gardens. So we are paying close attention and giving special care to the Latin words Douglas Chandor lovingly laid out for his wife in 1936 as the initial feature in the gardens.

"May this little garden flourish,
consecrated to Ina in the year of
Our Lord Edward the Eighth, forevermore."

Here we are in 2021, and despite some of the weather setbacks we have endured, we are still here, and our roots run deep in the Garden and in Weatherford's heart.

Return of the Honeybees

Honeybees on yellow flowers

The start of the spring pollinator influx has officially kicked off with the arrival of the Honeybees! These happy little helpers are an integral part of any garden, so their presence is most welcome here. They are one of the early signs that warmer weather is on its way and serve as a friendly reminder that it is time to start prepping your spring beds!

On that note, now is the open window to start planting the warmer weather crops such as various beans, corn, squash, cucumbers, melons, peppers, and tomato plants! Additionally, if you hurry, there is still a limited window to catch up following the late-season winter weather to plant your leafy green plants like mustards, cabbages, and kales. Try your hand at companion plants by mixing herbs and veggies together; this can help with pest control and make soil conditions their most ripe for a bountiful harvest!

Plant of the Month

Curly Leaf Parsley

'Curly Leaf Parsley' (Petroselinum crispum)
Herbs are a much-favored and often reached-for garden and kitchen staple, but have you ever considered their abilities to hold their own in an ornamental garden? This Parsley plant seen here has flourished for months near the Mount Cox waterfall as an herbaceous evergreen attraction among the other winter color. In areas like ours, Parsley is considered an annual biennial plant, and an annual in more subtropical climates. Additionally, like other garden herbs, Parsley is a source of nutrition for butterflies, caterpillars, and other wildlife. It truly makes for an unexpected pop in a landscape design, so consider incorporating herbal plants into your gardens! The butterflies will thank you by filling your garden with their beautiful presence.

Parting Shot

Parting Shot - Moss on Stone

Moss growing on the edge of an antique stone in the Millstone Pond is both beautiful and delicate if one stops to take a moment to appreciate the minute detail in this diminutive species. Moss does not typically grow well in this area as it needs more shade, humidity, and cooler breezes than what Texas usually has to offer. However, here in the innermost sanctums of the Garden, the conditions are right for getting lost on a lush, mossy path. Sometimes that's what a person needs; to be lost. Take a break. Forget the world for a while. Chandor Gardens presents that opportunity for escape. Amid life and bills and stress and meetings and pandemics and appointments and meal planning and sports practice and taxes and and, and, and AND, the need to get lost and explore the world with childlike wonder has never been more essential. So, if your personal "ands" feel like too many, why not take a break and take in the Garden? We are here, waiting for you.
