Secrets from the Garden

Chandor Gardens Newsletter - April 2021

Spring is well underway in the gardens. Indeed, we see the return of songbirds and butterflies in addition to the flowers and greenery. It seems like just yesterday, Chandor Gardens filled with delicate little buds, the tentative promise of a brighter future in the gardens, and have they ever fulfilled on it! The gardens are awash with color and fragrance, and it couldn't have come at a better time as April is also a great month weather-wise for having photography done in the gardens, so call us at 817-598-4334 to schedule a session today.

Keep up with us on Facebook and Instagram and we'll keep you posted there too.

See you in the Garden,
The Chandor Gardens Staff

Blooms Everywhere

Even in the shadier areas of the Garden, there are blooms everywhere. Tulips are striking with their bright blossoms, violas cluster in thick groupings, Irises are awakening from their winter slumber, and the Redbuds awash in purple and pink hues. These beautiful and native trees are a stunner in any garden, which is why we have many planted throughout ours! They are in full bloom right now and raise the eye to new heights with their color and vibrancy. There aren't many trees that bloom with such a bright flower, so how lucky are we that this species not only comes in a variety of cultivars but is also native to our landscape? It's spring, let's celebrate it!

Spring Fling

Spring Fling

This year's Spring Fling was a huge success, and we'd like to thank everyone who came out to see us and shop, and all the vendors and entertainers! The food was great, the music was beautiful, and the art was magnificent. We could not have had a better day!

We look forward to seeing everyone again at our Autumn Art Walk this October!

Spring Fling sign by Clair Nowell

Speaking of Spring Fling, we would like to extend an extra special "thank you" to Clair Nowell, daughter of Malinda Nowell, City Secretary. Claire is a 16-year-old sophomore at Peaster High School. Despite being involved in track, archery, and the National Honor Society, she still found the time to put her creativity to use and make us this adorable decorative sign that we can use at Spring Flings for years to come. Thank you so much, Claire!

Plant of the Month

Peach Tree
If we had a dollar for every time someone asked us what the "pretty pink bush" was, we'd have a whole lot of dollars! It's not surprising, given its short stature and odd growth habit. Virtually all fruit trees sold in the US are of grafted rootstock onto Plum tree roots, but that is not the case with this one. We suspect that someone dropped a peach pit after finishing their snack, and we wound up with this strikingly beautiful specimen. Interestingly, plum rootstock is ideal for grafting other fruit-bearing branches. It is possible to graft branches from different fruit trees onto one plum rootstock and have a single tree bearing apples, pears, peaches, etc.!

Parting Shot

Parting Shot - Gray Heron

You just never know what wildlife you might happen upon in the gardens. Check out this Gray Heron taking a break from its migratory travels in one of our large trees. This large, prehistoric-looking bird is a predatory wading bird endemic to most of the temperate world and travels south for the winter months. He's a cool-looking bird. There are always plenty of opportunities for bird watchers in the gardens, especially during migration events, so come on out and see which feathered friend is visiting today!
